Toyota has announced that it will temporarily halt the delivery of certain models such as the Land Cruiser, Innova, Hilux, etc., after discovering irregularities in engine performance testing.
On January 29th, Toyota announced the suspension of transportation for some vehicle models after its internal investigation unit discovered irregularities in the certification testing of diesel engines with codes 1GD and 2GD, produced by Toyota Industries.
The test results revealed that the electronic control units (ECUs) used in the power output testing had different horsepower settings compared to the control units used in mass production. Although this does not affect the actual operation of the vehicles, it violated the previously established strict monitoring procedures.
Toyota has announced a list of 10 vehicle models that are affected by the issue and are sold globally, including 6 models sold in Japan. The list includes Toyota Hiace, Innova, Granace, Fortuner, Land Cruiser 300, and Land Cruiser Prado. Among them, the Land Cruiser Prado model has ceased production since 2020.
In addition, there are also vehicle models from other brands that use engines produced by Toyota, such as Mazda Bongo, Hino Dyna, Hino Dutro, and Lexus LX 500d.
For the time being, Toyota has temporarily suspended production at 6 assembly lines in 4 factories. The company has also announced the temporary suspension of vehicle distribution to dealerships.
In a recent press conference, Mr. Koichi Ito, CEO of Toyota Industries, acknowledged responsibility for the management oversight that led to the irregularities. He said, “We deeply apologize for this, which was caused by Toyota Industries Corp. The reason for the problem lies within our company’s organizational structure.”
Japanese authorities have also initiated an investigation into the matter. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan has requested Toyota to provide a clear explanation regarding the irregularities.
According to the list released, Toyota’s official models sold in Vietnam are not affected. Currently, Toyota Vietnam has not provided an official response to this incident.
