In 2024, Honda is expected to start commercial production of the hydrogen fuel cell-powered CR-V. Initially, it will be available for sale in Japan and North America.
Alongside their electrification efforts, Honda is also making strides in researching new types of fuel engines. At the end of 2022, they announced the development of a CR-V version powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Fast forward nearly a year, Honda has now tested the hydrogen-powered CR-V in the US and Japan.
A user in Japan recently posted an image on X (formerly known as Twitter), showing a CR-V with a slightly different design from the current version and covered in camouflage with the word “hydrogen” clearly visible. A similar covered car was also spotted on the US roads not long ago.
The Honda CR-V hydrogen model is not solely dependent on hydrogen fuel. It is equipped with the ability to charge the battery, similar to a conventional electric vehicle. This feature allows users to charge the car like a regular electric vehicle for daily use, or quickly refuel it with hydrogen for longer trips, especially in areas where hydrogen gas stations are not widely available.
The hydrogen fuel cell system in the CR-V is a result of collaboration between Honda and General Motors. Honda claims that this new technology is one-third of the cost compared to the previous generation, while also having double the durability of the fuel cell system used in the 2019 Honda Clarity.
Production of the Honda CR-V with the hydrogen fuel cell engine is expected to begin in 2024. It is likely that the North American and Japanese markets will be the first to offer this version for sale.
