For more than 80 years, Mercedes-Benz has been selected to accompany the official visits of various popes throughout history. And now, the newly elected Pope Francis also has the option to choose a car from the prestigious “three-pointed star” brand.

Have you ever wondered what kind of car the Pope drives? Well, the first Mercedes-Benz car used by a Pope was the Nuerburg 460 Pullman Saloon, which was assigned to Pope Pius XI in 1930.

The next Pope, Pope John XXIII, drove the Mercedes-Benz 300D Laudelet, which was a cabriolet with an automatic transmission. This car, based on a cabriolet frame, became the choice for Pope John XXIII during the 1960s.

After him, Pope Paul VI utilized both the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet and the 300 SEL.

Starting from the 1980s, Pope John Paul II started using a specially designed “Popemobile” for processions in St. Peter’s Square. This Popemobile, based on the original G-Class, was created particularly for these occasions.

And since 2002, most popes have continued using this G-Class Popemobile, including Pope Benedict XVI who is still using it to this day.

Not too long ago, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, personally visited the Vatican to present a specially tailored Mercedes-Benz M-Class to Pope Benedict XVI. This vehicle had a unique body design.

In conclusion, despite being seen as a humble and down-to-earth individual, due to his involvement in important ceremonies, the new Pope Francis may also choose (or be provided) a car featuring the iconic logo of the luxurious Mercedes-Benz brand.
