The BMW X3, currently in its G01 generation, was first introduced in 2017. In 2021, the car underwent a mid-cycle update, which included updates to the M variants as well. It is anticipated that next year, BMW’s best-selling SUV will undergo a complete overhaul.

In a recent announcement, the German automaker confirmed that the next generation of the BMW X3 would be produced in South Africa as a plug-in hybrid vehicle for global export, starting in 2024. The Rosslyn plant, which has been producing cars since 1968 and has already manufactured 1.6 million vehicles, will receive a significant investment of $218 million to support the electrification process.

An illustrative design of the new generation BMW X3

While BMW didn’t provide any further details about the new X3, spy photographers managed to capture a prototype of the upcoming model last year. As the “golden goose” of the BMW X Series, it is highly regarded for its design and thus, it is unsurprising that BMW is taking a somewhat conservative approach to maintain its appeal.

Based on the images of the prototype, it is clear that the overall design of the new X3 remains quite familiar. However, the front of the vehicle is expected to undergo some significant adjustments, including a larger grille, though not overly excessive like that found on the 4 Series.

Additionally, the new BMW X3 appears to be slightly longer than its predecessor when viewed from the side. Despite the clever disguises, we can still discern some changes in the body design. The C-pillar seems to be slightly thinner, and the door handles are positioned lower.

At the rear, it is difficult to discern any specific changes that will be made to the new X3. However, the quad exhaust system indicates that this particular model is the M40i version.

Notably, the next generation BMW X3 will introduce a new plug-in hybrid version after it was discontinued in 2021. The previous version only offered an electric range of 30 km. The old plug-in hybrid drive system was a combination of a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 288 horsepower. It is highly likely that the new BMW X3 version will offer more power and an improved electric range.

The next generation BMW X3 is set to make its debut early next year, with sales expected to commence in late 2024.
