The prototype of the original Toyota Century SUV was initially planned to be launched with a 4-cylinder engine. However, a recent report from Japanese media states that the car will instead be introduced to the market with a 3.5L PHEV V6 engine.

Simon Humphries, the brand manager of Toyota, revealed the Century SUV model at the launch event of the new Alphard and Vellfire in June. Although only dark-toned teaser images of the car were shown to attendees, it was quickly noticed that the new model will have similar dimensions to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

The new version of the Century is expected to be built on Toyota’s TNHGA-K platform, which is also used by the Toyota Alphard / Vellfire, Lexus LM, Toyota Highlander, and Lexus TX.

Unfortunately, the famous sedan’s V8 engine will not be retained, and Bestcarweb suggests that the new SUV will receive a powertrain similar to the range-topping TX 550h+. This means that the 2024 Toyota Century SUV could be equipped with a plug-in hybrid V6 3.5L engine producing 406 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Aside from the engine, we know that the Century SUV will be exclusively offered in a two-row configuration and will have a longer wheelbase of over 50 mm compared to the Lexus TX, reaching 3,000 mm. The longer wheelbase, as well as the taller roofline, will provide the Century SUV with a much more spacious cabin compared to the sedan version, something that many customers will especially appreciate.

In terms of pricing, CarScoops suggests that the Century SUV could have a starting price of around 15 million Yen (equivalent to 105,000 USD), which is cheaper than the Century Sedan’s starting price of 20 million Yen (equivalent to 140,000 USD). The car is expected to be launched before the end of this year and may be available in various markets outside of Japan.
