Ford has changed its plans for the release of the Ford Explorer EV prototype. Initially, orders were supposed to start at the end of this year, but now they will begin in the spring of 2024. Delivery is expected in the summer of next year, as production has been delayed by about 6 months.
The Ford Explorer EV has a unique design that sets it apart from its gasoline-powered counterparts. Both the exterior and interior have been completely redesigned for the electric version.
Specifically designed for the European market, the Explorer EV is slightly smaller in size compared to the gasoline version. It measures less than 4.5 meters in length, making it ideal for maneuvering through the small cities of Europe. In comparison, the 2020 Explorer is 5,050 mm long, 2,002 mm wide, and 1,783 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,025 mm.
The 2023 Ford Explorer EV is one of two fully electric vehicles from Ford that will utilize the Volkswagen MEB platform. This collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen aims to bring cutting-edge electric vehicle technology to Ford’s lineup.
The design of the Explorer EV features a front protective shield in place of the traditional grille, distinctive hook-shaped LED daytime running lights, and eye-catching alloy wheels.
The range-topping variant will be equipped with dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 340 PS and 545 Nm of torque. With this power, the Ford Explorer EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 6 seconds. Additionally, there will be two other RWD variants available, with power outputs of 286 PS and 170 PS respectively. Ford is targeting a maximum range of 498 km on a full charge. Fast charging capabilities allow the Ford Explorer EV to charge from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes.
Inside, the Explorer EV is a 5-seater SUV with a standard luggage compartment capacity of 470 liters, which can be expanded to 1,400 liters when the seats are folded down.
The car features a 15-inch touchscreen entertainment system that can be adjusted to suit the driver’s preference. It also conceals a lockable storage compartment for keeping valuables secure. The central screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and the car is equipped with standard wireless charging.
Additional comfort features include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a massaging function for the driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning. The car also boasts a hands-free power tailgate.
For enhanced safety, the Explorer EV is equipped with Lane Change Assist to facilitate safe lane changes and Safe Exit Assist to alert cyclists approaching, especially in busy urban environments.
In Europe, the Ford Explorer EV will be available in two variants: Explorer and Explorer Premium. The expected starting price is under 45,000 Euros (49,000 USD).
