Kia is developing its first pickup truck model based on a separate frame platform and all-wheel drive. Rumors about Kia working on a pickup truck have been circulating for some time, and in March 2022, a company representative officially confirmed this plan. Now, it appears that the product development process is in its final stage, as Design Director Karim Habib recently confirmed to Carsale reporters in Australia that we will see the pickup truck model with the Kia logo soon.
There are speculations that the first Kia pickup truck model will be called “Tasman”. This is a name that the Korean automaker has registered the copyright for, but it has not been used for any model yet. Habib also mentioned that the new pickup truck will have a design similar to recently launched models, such as the EV5 or EV9, as the Korean brand wants its products to have a consistent design language.
Recently, there have been publications of test run images of a Kia pickup truck with a design similar to the Mohave SUV model. However, these are likely preliminary test versions, as there is no official design yet. According to the latest reports, the Kia pickup truck will have a double cabin configuration and will be available with diesel and electric powertrains. Additionally, another electric pickup truck model is also planned for the near future.
Unlike the Hyundai Santa Cruz, which has a one-piece body frame, the first Kia pickup truck is expected to be equipped with all-wheel drive and a separate frame platform. Reports suggest that the truck will have a payload capacity of around 1,000 kg and a towing capacity of 3,500 kg.
In an interview with Drive magazine of Australia in August, a Kia spokesperson stated that the company’s first pickup truck will be unveiled in 2024. Production of the truck will begin in early 2025 in Korea, and it will be available to customers by mid-2025.
