To create a Bugatti sports car, it takes more than just technical skills. Meticulous attention to detail is also crucial, especially in the painting process.
Unlike most other car manufacturers who rely on robots for painting and assembly to increase efficiency and speed, the French supercar brand takes a different approach.
For each car, the brand spends around 600-700 hours (equivalent to one month) to complete the painting process.
Before applying the first primer coat, Bugatti experts meticulously inspect each body panel for smoothness and any rough spots. Achieving perfection is key, as even the most professional painting would lose its meaning on a rough or uneven surface.
Once the body has been confirmed to be defect-free, painters move on to the primer coat, followed by sanding to eliminate any rough spots or dents caused by the paint itself.
The first primer coat alone requires approximately 100 hours. The next 100 hours are dedicated to the color coating process.
To ensure a durable and stunning paint color, artists apply layers of clear coating, followed by sanding, and another layer of clear coating and sanding to create depth and brightness for the final color layer.
After completing the painting process, each body panel is carefully checked again. If there are any inconsistencies in color between panels, one panel slightly darker or brighter than the others, it will be repainted in the workshop.
This process takes time and requires precision since body panels are often made of different materials. The car’s body sometimes combines metal in one area and carbon fiber in another. Craftsmen need to exercise extra meticulousness and care during this stage.
After the painting is complete, the body panels undergo 4 days of polishing. Following that, the car is placed in a brightly lit tunnel for 10 hours to ensure there are no flaws or imperfections, no matter how small.
Every design and production step must be undertaken with utmost dedication to aesthetics in order to create a Bugatti car.
