China’s luxury MPV earns safety accolades after crash: shares chassis with Volvo

Following a powerful impact involving a semi-truck's trailer, the Zeekr 009, a high-end MPV, was left in complete disarray at the car's front. Surprisingly, the A-pillar, despite the collision, remained intact and appeared entirely unaffected by the force of the crash.

Within the past few days, social media has been abuzz with images captured at the scene of a car accident in China. These images have garnered attention due to their connection to the safety of the Zeekr 009 – a luxurious MPV model from China that shares its platform with Volvo cars.

Images of the accident scene circulating on social media

The precise accident location remains unclear. What is known, however, is that the Zeekr 009 collided with the rear trailer of a truck. The collision was so powerful that it caused extensive damage to the front of the large MPV and shattered the windshield.

However, what surprised many individuals was the undamaged right A-pillar of this luxury MPV. The A-pillar of the Zeekr 009 remained intact, appearing unbent, while the truck trailer was pushed down approximately 10 cm. It’s important to note that there were no fatalities resulting from this accident.

Following the circulation of these images on social media, many people began praising the safety of the Zeekr 009. Some Chinese netizens even referred to this luxury MPV as a “street tank”.

This is the first time I’ve seen such a strong A-pillar,” wrote a Chinese netizen. “Indeed, it possesses remarkable quality,” commented another. “If it were a smaller car, the front seat passenger might have been endangered,” one individual pointed out. “I’m certain I will purchase this car as it could save my life during critical moments,” someone affirmed.

The 009 is a product of the Zeekr electric car brand, a part of the Geely Group. This large MPV model is developed based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. The upcoming all-electric luxury MPV model, EM90, from Volvo will also utilize this platform.

The Zeekr 009 is now available in China

According to the manufacturer’s announcement, the Zeekr 009 boasts an A-pillar constructed with 2000MPa high-strength steel. Moreover, the car body possesses three times the torsional rigidity of a conventional MPV. As a result, the Zeekr 009 is regarded as the “sturdiest MPV in history”.

The Zeekr 009 is a large MPV, measuring 5,029 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, 1,856 mm in height, with a wheelbase length of 3,025 mm.

The extensive investment in materials for the Zeekr 009 has made this MPV model rather expensive. In the Chinese market, prices range between 499,000 and 588,000 Chinese yuan (around 1.64 – 1.93 billion VND).

For this price, Chinese customers can expect features such as front-to-rear LED lighting, 19-inch alloy wheels, power-sliding doors, a dual-pane sunroof, a 6 or 7-seater interior, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.4-inch center touchscreen, a 15.6-inch entertainment screen suspended from the ceiling, touchscreens on the door upholstery, wireless phone charging, and USB Type-C ports.

The Zeekr 009’s rear lights, known as the “Wings of Light”, measure up to 1.76 m in length and consist of a total of 402 LED bulbs.

Additionally, the vehicle comes equipped with 30 advanced driver assistance features (ADAS) such as door-open collision warning, automatic parking, rear-end collision minimization, lane change warning, automatic lane change assistance, speed violation warning, automatic emergency braking when reversing at low speed, and traffic sign recognition.

The Zeekr 009 is powered by two electric motors on both axles, producing a total output of 544 horsepower and a maximum torque of 686 Nm. Thanks to this, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Depending on the version, the car will be equipped with either a 116 kWh or a 140 kWh battery, providing ranges of 702 km and 822 km, respectively.

Despite being newly introduced to the Chinese market, the Zeekr 009 has quickly achieved success. This car has outsold the Toyota Alphard in the MPV segment priced above 500,000 Chinese yuan for three consecutive months.
