An old driver’s license in Austria in 1904
The regulations for driver’s licenses may vary in different countries, but in general, applicants must go through legal procedures such as submitting an application, undergoing driving tests, and other procedures to obtain a driver’s license. Once issued, the person is legally allowed to participate in traffic with a vehicle.
Driver’s licenses are usually issued based on certain age requirements. When a person violates traffic laws, they may be asked to present their driver’s license for inspection. Some countries have penalties that may result in the confiscation or suspension of a driver’s license.
In 1888, Karl Benz, the inventor of the modern car, received written permission from the Ducal Grand Hotel to operate his vehicle on public streets. This can be considered the granting of the first driver’s license. In 1910, Germany established a standardized driver’s license system with training and tests. At that time, women driving vehicles were considered unusual, but this perception changed in 1929 when Lillie Elizabeth McGee became the first American woman to obtain a driver’s license.
