Honda might enter the electric vehicle market relatively late, but recent plans from the Japanese automaker indicate a strong focus on expanding their electric vehicle portfolio in the global market.
Specifically designed for the European market, Honda’s latest addition to their electric vehicle lineup is the compact e:Ny1 SUV. Previously showcased as the e:Ny1 Prototype, this model is similar to the e:NS1 and e:NP1 twin models available in China. The e:Ny1 bears a resemblance to the HR-V, but it’s important to note that it is an all-electric variant.
Although it shares similarities with the HR-V, Honda states that the e:Ny1 SUV is built on an entirely new e:N Architecture F platform. This platform incorporates various unique features to enhance aerodynamics, with a notable highlight being the front-wheel-drive setup.
The e:N Architecture F platform boasts three main features: a low center of gravity, a high-strength dedicated body structure, and intelligent aerodynamic design. These attributes collectively promise an exhilarating driving experience for customers.
The newly developed chassis of the Honda e:Ny1 improves torsional rigidity thanks to the extensive use of high-strength steel, accounting for approximately 47% of the body’s weight. This improvement in torsional rigidity translates to better driving quality and more efficient suspension system operation. With the new platform and chassis, the Honda e:Ny1 is expected to deliver outstanding performance, elegance, and exceptional comfort.
In terms of design differences compared to the HR-V, the Honda e:Ny1 Compact Electric SUV features new headlights, a closed front grille, and a redesigned front bumper. The EV model also sports unique alloy wheels, a white ‘H’ logo on the charging lid and steering wheel, providing a distinct identity for Honda’s electric vehicles.
The 2024 Honda e:Ny1 Compact Electric SUV is expected to offer a spacious interior. It will come equipped with a 15.1-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system that incorporates a fixed portion to control the air conditioning system. The e:Ny1 also features a separate instrument cluster, which appears to be approximately 10.25 inches in size.
The Honda e:Ny1 electric SUV is powered by a 68.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric powertrain produces a maximum output of 201 horsepower and a peak torque of 310 Nm. Honda claims that the e:Ny1 has a range of 412 km according to the WLTP standard. With a DC fast charger, the Honda e:Ny1 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 45 minutes.
The Honda e:Ny1 is expected to be launched in Europe with a price tag of around £30,000 (approximately $37,590). This competitive pricing puts it in direct competition with rivals such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and Peugeot e-2008.
