The KIA EV5, the third electric car model from KIA, is set to make its official debut at AutoChengdu, China on August 25th.
Based on leaked images, the production version of the KIA EV5 closely resembles the concept car. KIA has incorporated its “opposites united” design philosophy into the EV5, combining contrasting elements to create a unique and futuristic design. Along with its boxy shape and distinctive 21-inch wheels, this compact crossover electric vehicle features a “Digital Tiger Nose” grille in the front, reminiscent of KIA’s signature tiger nose grille.
The car showcases bold and sporty lines on its sides and distinctive slim LED taillights on the rear.
KIA has recently announced the price range for the EV5, as well as details about the battery pack for the South Korean and Chinese markets. Starting at 50 million won (approximately $38,000) in South Korea, the price increases to 57 million won ($43,800) for the long-range version.
The EV5’s battery pack, which will be used in the compact SUV sold in both South Korea and international markets, is larger than the current EV6’s battery pack (77.4 kWh), with a capacity of 82 kWh, providing a maximum range of over 600 km.
Notably, the charging system of the EV5 will be based on a 400V system instead of the higher-voltage 800V system used in other Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) electric vehicles. Although the 800V system enables the use of superfast EV chargers with up to 350 kW power, KIA has opted for the 400V system to reduce costs.
While initially intended for the Chinese market, KIA CEO Kia Song Ho-seong recently confirmed that the EV5 will also be available in South Korea and international markets. Kia highlighted its efforts to dispel the perception that the EV5 is exclusively tailored for China, stating that “the EV5 is struggling with various marketing measures to erase the image of the EV5 as an SUV exclusively for China,” according to CEO Ho-seong.
