Mazda Iconic SP is equipped with a hybrid powertrain combining a rotary engine and an electric motor. In addition, the car can also run on hydrogen energy.
At the 2023 Japanese Auto Show, Mazda unveiled a new concept car called the Iconic SP. This is a sneak peek at the upcoming generation of the MX-5. With its sleek design and distinctive “frog eye” headlights, this concept model also brings back memories of the iconic RX-7 sports car.
As per the manufacturer’s announcement, the Mazda Iconic SP has overall dimensions of 4,180 x 1,850 x 1,150 (mm), with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. Compared to the current generation MX-5, the Iconic SP is approximately 250mm longer.
In a world where most sports cars sport sharp and aggressive designs, the Mazda Iconic SP stands out with its simple and graceful appearance. The highlight at the front of the car is the pop-up headlights that pay homage to the RX-7. Additionally, there is the signature Mazda shield-shaped grille. At the rear, the Iconic SP features circular taillights. Moreover, this concept model boasts butterfly doors and aerodynamically designed 5-spoke wheels. Lastly, the special Viola red paint adds to the allure and sportiness of this car.
Mazda has not provided specific details about the interior space of the Iconic SP. However, based on the images released by the company, the cabin of this concept model showcases a simplistic and practical design. The car is equipped with a digital instrument cluster and a center touchscreen integrated into the dashboard instead of being mounted separately. The center control unit follows a minimalist design with push buttons for gear shifting and function adjustment buttons.
In addition to its striking design, the powertrain of the Iconic SP is also noteworthy. Specifically, this concept car is powered by a hybrid powertrain generating 365 horsepower, consisting of a rotary engine that supplies energy to the electric motor. Furthermore, this system is also capable of running on hydrogen fuel. Mazda has stated that the Iconic SP is equipped with two-way charging technology, allowing it to function as a backup power generator, providing enough electricity to power a household for over a week. However, detailed information regarding the battery capacity has not been disclosed.
