In the Vietnamese market, there is a high level of competition in the 150cc manual gear motorbike segment. Yamaha Exciter 150 (on the right in the picture) and Honda Winner 150 are some of the leading brands. Joining this competitive market, SYM has officially introduced its new sporty manual gear motorbike, the Star SR (on the left in the picture), which is equipped with a 170cc engine.
In the Vietnamese market, the all-new SYM Star SR 170 is priced at an estimated VND 49.9 million (excluding registration tax). The 2019 edition of the Yamaha Exciter 150 in the picture is priced at VND 47.5 million (including VAT).
In terms of overall dimensions, the all-new Star SR 170 measures 2,000 x 720 x 1,115 mm (length x width x height). On the other hand, the 2019 edition of the Exciter 150 in the picture has dimensions of 2,025 x 725 x 1,102 mm.
Both bikes are targeted towards young customers who are interested in sports manual gear motorbikes, as well as first-time users of manual gear motorbikes.
Both the all-new Star SR 170 and the 2019 Exciter 150 feature LED lights in their headlight clusters.
Below the headlight, the all-new Star SR 170 has “V”-shaped LED position lights, giving the bike a more aggressive look. On the other hand, the position lights combined with turn signals on the 2019 Exciter 150 use halogen bulbs with an asymmetrical design on the upper part of the front face. The taillight of the Exciter 150 has a simple and large design.
The instrument cluster of the all-new Star SR 170 features an LCD display and an analog tachometer. On the other hand, the 2019 Exciter 150 has a single LCD digital display with a design inspired by the R1. It provides clear information on speed, distance, fuel consumption, average speed, etc.
The arrangement of switches on the all-new Star SR 170 remains unchanged, while the 2019 Exciter 150 has a sportier design with more switches. The flash pass switch (Pass) for overtaking, which is also integrated on the Star SR 170, is a completely new feature on this manual gear motorbike. It allows riders to easily communicate their intention to overtake. The switch cluster on the right side also has an engine stop function button (red – on the right in the picture). This button quickly and effectively cuts off the engine in emergency situations, especially when the bike falls but the engine is still running.
Compared to the previous edition, the lock system of the 2019 Exciter 150 remains unchanged in terms of design. However, the Answer Back Key feature has been added, which helps locate the bike quickly within a radius of 20 meters. On the other hand, the lock system on the all-new Star SR 170 is still a traditional mechanical key type.
The seats of both the all-new Star SR 170 (left) and the 2019 Exciter 150 (right) are designed with a high-low separation for the rider and the passenger, creating an aesthetic look.
Both bikes have their batteries positioned at the top. The all-new Star SR 170 weighs 130 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 6.5 liters. The 2019 Exciter 150 weighs 123 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 4.5 liters.
The all-new Star SR 170 features a simple taillight design that is raised along the body of the bike. It is equipped with multiple LED bulbs. On the other hand, the 2019 Exciter 150 still retains its unique taillight design that is characteristic of Yamaha’s sports bike lineup.
The all-new Star SR 170 features a sporty mono-shock rear suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels with a dual 5-spoke design. It is equipped with 90/80 tires and a telescopic front fork. On the other hand, the 2019 Exciter 150 features the unique Y-shape 17-inch alloy wheels combined with a non-pneumatic front tire size of 90/80 and a telescopic front fork. However, the Star SR 170 has an advantage over its competitor as it is equipped with an ABS system for the front wheel.
The rear wheel of both bikes remains unchanged. It still retains the same wheel size and comes with a 120/70 rear tire and a large exhaust system.
Both the all-new Star SR 170 and the 2019 Yamaha Exciter 150 feature sporty mono-shock rear suspension.
The all-new SYM Star SR 170 is equipped with a SOHC, 4-stroke, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, 174.5cc engine. It can deliver a maximum power of 15 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and a peak torque of 13.6 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed gearbox and meets Euro 3 emission standards.
The 2019 Yamaha Exciter 150 is equipped with a SOHC, single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 149.7cc. It can deliver a maximum power of 15.1 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and a peak torque of 13.8 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The engine is coupled with a 5-speed gearbox.
