Last night (5/7), the first race of the 2020 F1 season officially began in Austria, almost 5 months behind the original schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to this race, 10 races had been postponed or cancelled, including the race in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Fans had been eagerly waiting for 5 months, and their patience was rewarded with an exciting and captivating first race in Austria. Valtteri Bottas capitalized on his pole position and maintained his lead throughout the 71 laps to finish in first place. However, the race was not without intense competition. Only 11 out of 20 drivers completed the 71 laps on the Red Bull Ring track.
At times, the two Mercedes drivers, Bottas and Hamilton, were more than 10 seconds ahead of the third-placed driver. But with the help of safety car appearances, the drivers in the back group were able to close the gap.
The tension heightened in lap 61 when Hamilton and Albon collided. Hamilton’s impatience caused him to cut across Albon’s path, resulting in the Thai driver spinning out and retiring from the race. Hamilton received a 5-second penalty for this mistake.
Despite the collision and penalty, the race continued to be intense. Charles Leclerc, the young driver from Ferrari, seized the opportunity and made his way to the third position, closely chasing the two Mercedes drivers. With Hamilton penalized 5 seconds and a comfortable gap between Bottas and Leclerc, the Ferrari driver secured the second position.
The biggest surprise of the race was the impressive performance of the McLaren drivers, especially Lando Norris. Norris started in the 4th position and maintained his stability throughout the race. In the final lap, he achieved the fastest lap and closed the gap to Hamilton. Due to Hamilton’s penalty, Norris secured the 3rd position overall.
Carlos Sainz, also from McLaren, had a remarkable debut as he finished 5th overall, right behind Hamilton. On the other hand, it was a forgettable race for Aston Martin as both their drivers retired due to engine problems and collisions, scoring no points.
After stage 1, Mercedes leads the race with 37 points, followed by McLaren with 26 points. Ferrari trails behind with 19 points. The second race of the F1 2020 season will take place at the same venue, the Red Bull Ring, this weekend, promising another thrilling race.
