In the first three quarters of 2023, Focus2move, a data statistics website, has released a list of the top 10 best-selling car models in Southeast Asia.
When looking at this list, it becomes evident that Vietnamese users have different preferences compared to the rest of ASEAN.
The Toyota Hilux claims the top spot as the best-selling car in Southeast Asia, with sales reaching 154,100 units in the first three quarters of 2023. This represents a 6.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, the Hilux does not enjoy the same popularity among Vietnamese users, with only 106 units sold in the first nine months of 2023.
The Isuzu D-Max takes second place in the Southeast Asian market, with sales of 126,192 units. This reflects a 19.7% decrease compared to the same period last year. In Vietnam, the D-Max has relatively low sales, with only 393 units sold in the past nine months.
Thailand is likely responsible for the majority of Hilux and D-Max sales, as it is the second-largest new car market in Southeast Asia and the most popular pickup truck market in the region.
The third-place spot is occupied by the Perodua Myvi with sales of 86,281 units, representing an 8.3% increase compared to the same period last year. However, this model is currently not available in the Vietnamese car market. Perodua also has another representative on the list – the Bezza, ranking tenth with sales of 51,735 units.
Both the Myvi and Bezza are well-liked car models among consumers in Malaysia, which is the third-largest car market in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and Thailand.
The remaining names on the top 10 list are the Honda City with sales of 81,668 units; Honda HR-V with sales of 73,547 units; Mitsubishi Xpander with sales of 71,959 units; Ford Ranger with sales of 64,187 units; Toyota Vios with sales of 62,929 units; and Toyota Avanza with sales of 58,574 units.
These car models are familiar and popular in the Vietnamese market. Specifically, the Mitsubishi Xpander is currently the leading car model in Vietnam, with sales reaching 14,187 units in the past nine months. Ford Ranger, Toyota Vios, and Honda City are also consistently among the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam.
The Toyota Avanza, although not popular in Vietnam, is selling well in the Indonesian market, accounting for 77% of total sales in the region.
