In the first three quarters of 2023, the number of cars sold in China reached 15.239 million units, a 2.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Notably, the green car segment experienced significant growth in the populous market, accounting for 34.1% of total sales.
More specifically, by the end of the third quarter in 2023, consumers had purchased a total of 3.5 million electric cars and 1.678 million hybrid electric cars.
BYD emerged as the best-selling car brand in China, delivering nearly 1.8 million cars in the first three quarters of 2023, a 54.9% increase compared to the same period last year. The company also claimed an 11.76% market share.
Volkswagen secured second place with 1.56 million cars sold, accounting for a 10.25% market share. Toyota ranked third, selling over 1.24 million cars in the past nine months and commanding an 8.19% market share.
Honda also enjoyed popularity in the Chinese market, recording sales of 828,000 cars over the nine-month period.
Other Chinese car brands, including Changan, Geely, and Wuling, also secured spots in the top 10 best-selling car brands in the populous market. However, the combined sales of these three brands amounted to less than 200,000 units, still lower than BYD’s sales.
BMW and Audi also made it into the top 10 best-selling car brands in China, with sales figures of 515,194 and 457,627 cars, respectively.
In the electric car segment, BYD retained its position as the “king” with 893,754 cars sold, accounting for a 30.15% market share. Tesla followed closely with sales of 433,729 cars. Most of the best-selling electric cars were domestic Chinese brands.
