Toyota began production of its first GR edition long-haul car in 2019 but its popularity and reliability have been on the rise. As a result, the Japanese automaker has decided to incorporate the GR edition into many other models, following in the footsteps of BMW and Mercedes-Benz with their M and AMG variants. In addition to enhancing performance, the GR Sport is also seen as an exterior upgrade option for the standard version.
One of those models is the recently launched Toyota Hilux GR Sport 2024, which features a more captivating appearance to enhance its competitiveness against its rival, the Ford Ranger Raptor. The new edition is officially named Hilux GR Sport II and is set to be available in the UK market starting from 2024. Customers will only have the option of a double cab.
Essentially, the exterior of the 2024 Hilux GR Sport II is noticeably more aggressive, with a ride height that has been increased by 20mm compared to the standard Hilux, resulting in higher ground clearance. Additionally, the approach angle has been improved from 29 to 30 degrees.
The eye-catching 17-inch black alloy wheels deserve special mention for providing a symmetrical and sporty overall appearance. The suspension system has also been enhanced with improved responsiveness, larger front brakes, and the replacement of the rear drum brakes with disc brakes.
However, the most noticeable change is the increased width of 140mm and 150mm for the front and rear track respectively, leading to improved stability for the pickup truck and a broader, more solid stance. The GR Sport II has an overall exterior that combines sportiness and muscularity in an appealing manner.
The front grille of the 2024 Hilux GR Sport II is in the shape of a black G letter, with the GR emblem attached. Several other details, such as the side steps, door handles, and rear bumper, are also painted black. In contrast, the brake calipers and springs are red.
The interior upgrades of the 2024 Hilux GR Sport II are minimal, featuring sport seats with the GR Sport logo on the headrests, upholstered in suede and synthetic leather. The seat belts and gear lever are red, creating a distinctive look compared to the standard 2024 Toyota Hilux. Toyota has also upgraded the pedals with aluminum and equipped the vehicle with an 8-inch Smart Connect+ multimedia system.
Unfortunately, there are no performance changes that make the 2024 Toyota Hilux GR Sport II more impressive. Under the hood, it still houses a 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and produces 201 horsepower. This engine is consistent with the one used in the standard Hilux in the UK market. If the GR edition of the Hilux is introduced in Vietnam, it might still adopt the previous 147-horsepower engine.
In Vietnam, the Toyota Hilux is officially available in a single 4×2 version with a starting price of 852 million VND. Despite its unimpressive sales and equipment, many consumers still choose this pickup truck due to its durability, particularly for off-road conditions in mountainous areas.
