The G01 generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2017 and received a mid-cycle update in 2021, including updates to the M variants. However, BMW is planning a full upgrade for the next generation of its best-selling SUV.
In a recent announcement, BMW confirmed that the next generation of the X3 will be produced in South Africa as a plug-in hybrid vehicle for global export, starting in 2024. To support the electrification process, the Rosslyn plant will receive a significant investment of $218 million. This plant, which has been in operation since 1968 and has produced 1.6 million cars, will play a key role in the production of the new X3.
Illustrative design of the new generation BMW X3
The details about the new X3 are still limited at this time. However, spy photographers captured a prototype of the new model, which suggests that BMW will adopt a somewhat conservative approach to the design of the new X3. This approach is understandable considering the high popularity of the X Series family and the positive response from users.
From the images of the prototype, it can be seen that the overall design of the new X3 remains quite familiar. However, there are expected to be noticeable adjustments to the front, including a larger grille, though not overly excessive like the one on the 4 Series.
Looking at the side view, the new BMW X3 appears slightly longer than its predecessor. Despite careful disguise, some changes in the body design can still be observed. The C-pillar seems to be slightly thinner, and the door handles are positioned lower.
Regarding the rear, it is difficult to discern the exact changes that will be made on the new X3. However, the quad exhaust system indicates that this is the M40i version.
Interestingly, the new generation of the BMW X3 will reintroduce a plug-in hybrid version, which was discontinued in 2021. The previous version had an electric range of only 30 km and featured a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 288 horsepower. It is expected that the new X3 will offer even greater power and an improved electric range.
The next generation BMW X3 is scheduled to make its debut early next year and is expected to be available for sale in late 2024.
