At a press conference held on November 14th, Jorge Lorenzo, the three-time MotoGP champion, officially announced his retirement from the MotoGP championship. Lorenzo stated that his last appearance in the prestigious competition would be at the race in Valencia over the weekend.
In the upcoming 2020 MotoGP season, the Marquez brothers will be teammates at the Repsol Honda Team.
Initially, many speculated that French rider Johann Zarco would be selected to replace Lorenzo and compete alongside 2019 champion Marc Marquez. However, in a surprising move, the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) decided to choose 23-year-old Alex Marquez as the new teammate for Marc Marquez. Alex Marquez has signed a one-year contract and will be riding the RC213V alongside his older brother.
Alberto Puig, the Team Manager of the Repsol Honda Team, explained the decision to choose Alex Marquez. Puig mentioned that Alex is the reigning Moto2 champion, and this achievement played a significant role in HRC’s decision. Additionally, HRC is focused on nurturing young talent for the future, and Alex Marquez was deemed the most suitable choice. Puig also emphasized that Alex’s brotherly relationship with the 2019 MotoGP champion did not influence HRC’s decision.
The 2020 MotoGP season will commence with the first race in Qatar on March 8th, 2020. The Qatar Grand Prix holds the distinction of being the only night race in MotoGP history.
