BMW and Mercedes-Benz plan to establish at least 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations in China by 2026.
BMW and Mercedes-Benz have long been fierce competitors in the luxury car market. However, in an effort to boost electric vehicle sales in China, both companies have joined forces to create a joint venture focused on building charging stations.
In a recent joint statement, Mercedes-Benz and BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) announced a 50/50 joint venture to build and operate a fast-charging network in China, which is currently the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

The goal of this joint venture is to establish at least 1,000 charging stations and around 7,000 charging poles by the end of 2026. The first charging station is expected to be operational by 2024.
While detailed information about these charging stations has not been disclosed, both companies have stated that they will be utilizing the latest charging technologies. These stations will be compatible with charging plugs from various electric vehicle brands, though exclusive services such as online reservations will only be available to BMW and Mercedes-Benz customers.

China’s electric vehicle market has experienced significant growth over the past decade, reaching a record sales volume of 6.8 million vehicles in 2022. As this market continues to expand, China has been an active player in the installation of charging infrastructure, with 649,000 public charging stations added in 2021, accounting for over 70% of newly installed charging stations worldwide.
