Chinese car manufacturer BYD has achieved a significant milestone in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector, producing a total of 6 million vehicles since 2008.
In April 2022, BYD made a strategic decision to cease production of all internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and focus exclusively on NEV models, including plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EVs).
BYD takes pride in being the first car manufacturer worldwide to reach this remarkable milestone. However, it’s important to note that this accomplishment is specific to the NEV lineup, as other manufacturers have produced larger quantities of electric vehicles across different categories. For instance, Toyota announced the production of 15 million self-charging hybrid vehicles in 2020. Meanwhile, Tesla surpassed the landmark of 5 million purely electric vehicles in September 2023, targeting 6 million vehicles by early 2024.
The 6 millionth vehicle by BYD is the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5, recently rolled off the production line at the Zhengzhou factory. This plug-in hybrid SUV is slightly smaller than the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and was initially introduced in August of last year.
Looking at BYD’s previous production milestones, it’s evident that NEV sales are growing at an unprecedented pace. Specifically, BYD took 13 years to produce the first million NEVs, only 1 year for the second million, and merely 6 months for the third million.
Since then, the Chinese car manufacturer achieved an additional 2 million NEVs in the subsequent 9 months. Finally, the milestone of 6 million vehicles was attained in a mere 3 months.
BYD presently operates 9 PHEV and BEV production plants across China, situated in Tay An, Te Nam, Trinh Chau, Thuong Chau, Tuong Duong, Hop Phi, Truong Sa, Phuc Chau, and Tham Quyen.
In addition to China, which is the largest consumer market for BYD, the company exports vehicles to 57 countries worldwide. As part of its global expansion strategy, BYD aims to establish new plants outside of China, including in Thailand and Brazil. Notably, BYD recently introduced the Han sedan model in the United Arab Emirates and inaugurated a new flagship showroom in Dubai.
