In the past year, Car & Classic has observed a shift in the preferences of vintage car enthusiasts. There has been an increasing trend towards younger classic cars, often referred to as modern classics. Additionally, there has been a significant rise in searches for vintage cars, with a 39% increase in interest for the top 200 most sought-after classic car models.
Chris Pollitt, the editor’s secretary at Car & Classic, has noted that the current pandemic situation has led many individuals to explore new hobbies and invest their disposable income. Classic car ownership has emerged as a popular choice, offering both a hobby and a potential investment opportunity.
Furthermore, the demographic of vintage car enthusiasts has undergone a shift. The generation that grew up with cars from the 1960s to the 1970s has aged, and a new wave of enthusiasts has emerged, particularly those with nostalgia for the 1970s to 1980s and even the 1990s.
Among the most sought-after models, the Porsche 911, Jaguar E-Type, Ford Mustang, and Nissan Skyline have gained popularity. However, it is noteworthy that older models such as the Ford Cortina and Volkswagen Beetle have experienced a decline in popularity. Modern-day enthusiasts are more focused on acquiring their desired models rather than settling for readily available options.
In addition to the aforementioned models, sports cars like the BMW E30, Mazda RX7 with rotary engines, and classic Toyota MR2/Supras have seen a significant increase in popularity. Hot hatchbacks such as the Ford Escort XR3i or XR2 have also witnessed a surge in demand. This trend reflects the growing interest in purchasing classic cars for both the nostalgic experience and everyday use.
