A recent study from Consumer Report reveals that electric cars are experiencing more issues compared to traditional gasoline cars.
Specifically, the 2023 report cited by Fortune indicates that electric cars have a failure rate of 80% higher than gasoline cars between 2021 and 2023.
During the winter, electric cars often encounter problems related to batteries, charging systems, and starting.
Currently, electric car manufacturers are continuously conducting research and development to improve reliability over time. However, for now, users still have to acknowledge the fact that electric cars have a significant number of issues. Moreover, the limited availability of charging stations and the high cost further dampen the enthusiasm of users towards electric cars.
In addition, the study by Consumer Report also sheds light on the fact that hybrid cars face similar issues to electric cars. However, due to their longer presence on the market, hybrid cars are generally more reliable than pure electric cars as they have been successfully addressing these issues.
The survey data obtained by Consumer Report from electric car owners between 2021 and 2023 was compared with data from older models. Based on the severity of issues such as battery failure and engine failure, the organization came up with a ranking.
According to the report by Consumer Report, the failure rate of electric cars was twice as high as that of gasoline cars between 2021 and 2022. This rate decreased to 21% in 2023 but still remained higher compared to gasoline cars.
Although Tesla is considered experienced in research and production, expert Fisher also points out that the company is concerned about car failures. Hence, they concentrate on selling smaller and more affordable models like the Model Y or Model 3. In reality, these models are simpler and have fewer issues compared to luxury models like the Model S or X.
In terms of brand reliability ranking, Toyota and Lexus take the lead, followed by Mini, Acura, and Honda. Tesla, on the other hand, ranks 14th out of the 30 ranked car brands. Brands such as Jeep, Volkswagen, Rivian, Mercedes Benz, and Chrysler are placed at the bottom of the reliability ranking.
