Specifically, the new Split View camera feature enables drivers to have a 180-degree display of the front or rear area of the car, allowing them to observe traffic and obstacles on both sides of the road. This is the latest example of the brand’s advancements in using recording technology to enhance driving convenience and safety.
The Split View feature can be activated with a single touch button, utilizing a camera that instantly transmits images from the 1-megapixel wide-angle lenses located on the car’s grille and rear door. The 8-inch screen simultaneously displays three different angles to assist the driver in quickly identifying approaching obstacles from the front or sides of the vehicle.
For models equipped with Split View, the front camera is always kept clean by a small water wiper. This wiper is also integrated with the backup camera on the Ford Explorer.
By 2018, the backup camera will become a standard feature on all Ford cars in the North American market, and by 2020, the majority of the brand’s vehicles in this region will also be equipped with a front camera. This means that Ford aims to install over 2 million new cameras per year on its vehicle models from now until 2020.
Ford first introduced its backup camera technology on the 2007 Ford Expedition, and now this technology is widely available on all Ford cars, SUVs, and light trucks in the North American market. It is also a standard feature on all Ford Focus, Fusion, Explorer, Escape, Edge, and Mustang models.
In addition, Ford has announced that the next-generation Super Duty truck will be equipped with the latest and most advanced recording technology, supporting lane-keeping assistance and allowing drivers to have a more comprehensive view of the car’s surroundings than ever before.
The new Super Duty model will have up to 7 cameras and an entirely new digital architecture, solidifying the brand’s position as a market leader in advanced recording technology and helping drivers navigate narrow spaces more effectively.
Furthermore, the 2016 F-150 model will feature up to 5 cameras, the most among Ford’s current vehicle models. Four of these cameras are mounted on the outside mirrors, front, and rear of the car, providing a 360-degree view and comprehensive rear-view monitoring function.
The front-facing camera is situated behind the rearview mirror and is used to activate the headlight system and the Lane-Keeping Aid feature, which detects lane deviation. Although the driver cannot directly see the camera’s image, the vehicle’s computer relies on these visual signals to control the rest of the system.
