Hyundai and Kia have reached an agreement to settle a class action lawsuit involving a viral TikTok challenge called Kia Challenge. The settlement amount is a staggering $200 million, with approximately $145 million allocated for vehicle owners who had their cars stolen. This lawsuit applies to around 9 million vehicles that lacked the factory-installed anti-theft device and push-button start feature.
A notorious group of thieves known as the Kia Boyz gained notoriety for demonstrating how to bypass the security systems on various Hyundai and Kia models easily. They accomplished this by simply tampering with the USB port. These videos, collectively known as the Kia Challenge, were posted on popular platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the Kia Challenge resulted in hundreds of car thefts in the United States and caused 14 accidents resulting in eight fatal injuries.
At present, no accurate statistics exist regarding the number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles stolen nationwide in the United States. However, a report from the City of Milwaukee indicated that the number of stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles increased from less than 1,000 in 2020 to nearly 7,000 in 2021.
In February of this year, Hyundai and Kia took steps to enhance security by providing an extended alarm time update from 30 seconds to 60 seconds when a vehicle is breached. Additionally, the key must be inserted into the ignition to activate the ignition system. The NHTSA reported that since November 2022, the two automakers have distributed over 26,000 steering wheel locks to consumers.
