Recently, McLaren Automotive has introduced its most exclusive and ambitious theme to date – the intricate and astounding 3-7-59 theme.

Executed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) paint technicians, the theme is showcased on the McLaren 750S supercar.

This special edition was unveiled by McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris, McLaren IndyCar driver Pato O’Ward, and former McLaren F1 driver Derek Beli, who competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice with a McLaren F1 GTR. Also present at the event were Michael McDonagh, Managing Director of MSO and Motorsport at McLaren Automotive.

Unveiled at the Velocity International luxury sports racing event at Sonoma Raceway, USA, the 3-7-59 theme pays tribute to McLaren’s victories in the ‘Triple Crown’ consisting of the Indianapolis 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and 24 Hours of Le Mans. The launch event marks a significant moment in the brand’s 60-year history since its establishment in 1963.

To complete this commemorative paint theme, McLaren spent over 1,200 hours painting six 750S cars, including two coupe and spider versions. All six cars have been sold.

Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, commented on the unique 750S theme: “In celebration of McLaren’s 60th anniversary, McLaren showcases its legacy of pushing boundaries, both in the world of motorsport and excellence in recent supercar and hypercar models. The 3-7-59 paint theme draws inspiration from both domains, serving as a testament to McLaren’s exceptional performance and honoring its Triple Crown triumphs. This is the most demanding project ever undertaken by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), showcasing their expertise in paint techniques on a groundbreaking supercar in its segment.”

The name of the 3-7-59 theme is derived from the racing numbers associated with each victory of the McLaren cars in the Triple Crown: number 3 on the M16D model in the Indy 500 race won by Johnny Rutherford in 1974, number 7 on the McLaren MP4/2 car victorious at Monaco in 1984, and number 59 on the McLaren F1 GTR car that triumphed at Le Mans in 1995 with Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya, and JJ Leto.

Similar to the iconic winning cars and the prestige of the Triple Crown achievements, the 3-7-59 theme incorporates the colors of the three victorious cars, skillfully blending them into a vibrant mosaic, an artwork that vividly portrays all three races and the triumphant cars.

The 3-7-59 theme showcases McLaren’s exceptional paint application capabilities by combining more than 20 colors to create a striking exterior. To achieve the incredible depth and detail on each car, MSO paint technicians drew upon decades of experience and techniques developed for previous custom models commissioned by customers.

The story of the Triple Crown comes to life through the 3-7-59 theme even before the driver steps inside. The key represents the hand-painted multicolored artwork reflecting the car’s exterior appearance. The front of the car draws inspiration from the white and red design of the MP4/2 car, featuring the number 7 on the bonnet, elegantly integrated into the paint’s “broken” effect reminiscent of this F1 car.

The sides of the car pay homage to the McLaren F1 GTR car’s 1995 Le Mans victory, represented by a gray tone with the number 59, while the glistening green dots on the car signify its participation in the GT1 class of this prestigious 24-hour race.

The intricate details of the paintwork also tell stories related to the Triple Crown, including references to the winning cars, the years McLaren emerged victorious in the Triple Crown events, and the evolution of the original McLaren logo to the current Speedmark used today.

Similar to the extraordinary winning cars and the distinction of the Triple Crown triumphs, the 3-7-59 theme merges the colors of the three victorious cars into a vibrant mosaic, an artistic representation of all three races and the triumphant cars.

To achieve the incredible depth and detail on each car, MSO paint technicians drew upon decades of experience and techniques developed for previous custom models commissioned by customers.

Inside the Vortex lightweight alloy wheels, three-color brake calipers are painted in alternating blue, red, and Le Mans gold, reminiscent of the three victorious cars in the Triple Crown.

In addition to the exquisite craftsmanship evident on the body of the 3-7-59 themed cars, MSO technicians have incorporated hidden and interactive features. QR codes are concealed beneath the paint, both on the exterior and interior sides. Each code serves as a direct gateway to a website where viewers can discover more details about the car. When viewed from a specific angle under particular lighting conditions, the reflective image of the 3-7-59 pattern illuminates on the LED strip within the front light cluster. At the rear, the MSO logo glows within the air brake lights beneath the rear wing.

As part of their exploration with new materials, McLaren has included exterior details made from leaf-shaped metal. Placed beneath both sides of the McLaren 750S “3-7-59” editions, the silver Triple Crown logo details feature a patina finish, achieved through an in-house plating technique developed by the brand to achieve the desired effect. This is one of the standout features consistently seen throughout this commemorative edition.

The Triple Crown badge is also present in the car’s interior. It appears alongside orange McLaren stitching on the carbon fiber racing seats and is embossed on the center armrest. The seats showcase the Triple Crown artwork on the black Alcantara surface, complemented by white stitching to create contrast.

The car’s interior also includes carbon fiber door trim details with color-matched stitching to the seats, a 12 o’clock paint stripe on the steering wheel, and carbon fiber shift paddles hand-painted with a “broken” red-white paint effect reminiscent of the front paint design of the car as a tribute to the McLaren MP4/2.

The 3-7-59 theme incorporates unique additional features, such as laser-engraved multicolor accentuated patterns and finishes like ceramics on the pedal pad. Black-white-orange Triple Crown stars are also present. Similar stars adorn the carbon fiber door sill. The third hidden detail is only revealed when the door is opened – a tribute plaque. The plaque, in red-white carbon, honors the brand’s unique victories at F1 and Monaco Grand Prix events.
