“Honda CRV 2018”, “Honda CRV new generation”, “Honda CRV 5+2”, “Honda CRV turbo” or “Honda CRV price” are the trending keywords lately. However, what really caught my attention are the words “turbo” and “5+2”. As a fan of turbo engines, it would be fantastic to have the 5+2 configuration transformed into a 7-seater.

In the Autodaily’s car evaluation program, we will take a closer look at the Honda CR-V 2018, specifically the top-tier L version.

Exterior design

The new CR-V features a remarkable exterior transformation. The front end exudes power with its high hood, large honeycomb grille, and chrome accents, giving the CR-V a more muscular appearance. All the lighting on the car is equipped with full LED technology, and I particularly admire the headlight design on this model. Of course, the headlights have an automatic on/off mode.

On the sides of the CRV, I was impressed by the large openings of the front and rear doors, making it easy to enter and exit the vehicle. However, what truly stands out is the rear design. From the full LED taillights to the complete disappearance of the humpback from the previous generation, the overall design is stunning.

In my opinion, this is the most pleasing design among all the generations of CR-V. Although the trunk space has been slightly reduced to accommodate the 5+2 seating configuration, it still provides enough space for three large suitcases and additional travel bags. The ability to customize the third-row seats enhances the car’s flexibility when transporting both people and luggage. Furthermore, the power trunk is now a standard feature in the new CR-V.

Interior and amenities

With the 5+2 design, the third-row seat is a major concern for me as it naturally narrows down the space. To access the third-row seat, I have to push the second-row seat forward while slightly reclining the backrest. Thankfully, the second-row seat in the CR-V is adjustable, allowing for a reasonable amount of legroom in the third-row seat. However, if I want more spacious and comfortable seating, a dedicated 7-seater car would be a better option. It’s like upgrading from a 90m2 apartment with 3 bedrooms to a 300m2 villa with the same number of bedrooms but significantly larger, requiring a substantial investment.

The CR-V offers air vents for all seats, including the front seats, second-row seats with 2 USB charging ports, and even 4 air vents in the ceiling for the third-row seats. The panoramic sunroof adds to the spacious and well-lit ambiance of the car. Additionally, the curtain airbag system in all rows ensures safety throughout the vehicle. It’s worth noting that this feature is only available in the top-of-the-line CR-V L version.

The new CR-V boasts an impressive sound system. Gone are the days when users complained about the sound quality in the old CR-V. The 8-speaker, 180W audio system, combined with the beautiful 7-inch screen, allows seamless connectivity with Apple Carplay or Android Auto. The voice recognition function works accurately, and I had a smooth experience making calls using the contact list in the car’s system. The navigation system is user-friendly and convenient. The 7-inch screen replaces the need for constantly looking at my phone, making it easier for me to focus on driving.

The design and quality of the interior space in the new CR-V have significantly improved. I appreciate the attention to detail, the abundance of storage compartments, and the USB charging slots available in the spacious storage compartment under the armrest. The display settings and clock can be customized through the 7-inch screen menu according to personal preferences. Although I haven’t had the chance to experience the cooling quality of the CR-V’s air conditioning system in the winter season, I believe it will meet expectations.

The steering wheel of the CR-V resembles the one in the Civic model. It offers a small, compact, and beautiful design with a smooth feel. The smart cruise control function enhances the driving experience, with the speed displayed on the dashboard. Adjusting the speed is a breeze, whether it’s by lightly pressing the increase/decrease button for a 1 km/h change or holding the button longer to round up to the nearest 10. However, it’s unfortunate that the CR-V in Vietnam is not equipped with advanced systems like blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, or a 360-degree camera.

Driving experience

To truly experience the turbo engine, chassis improvements, suspension system, and AHA steering assist system, we headed to Ba Vi summit. Despite the wet and foggy conditions, which affected our photoshoots, they provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the major changes in the CR-V.

Unlike previous occasions, I invited three familiar editors, Duy “handsome,” Tu?n “bald,” and Long “dark,” to join me with a full load of luggage.

The road to Ba Vi summit becomes steeper as you ascend, with visibility reduced to about 10-20 meters due to wet fog. Nevertheless, the new CR-V demonstrated its advantages remarkably well. The turbo 1.5 engine, generating 188hp at 5,600rpm and a torque of 240Nm between 2,000-5,000rpm, operates smoothly. Even at low speeds below 2,500rpm, there is minimal throttle delay. Once the engine exceeds 2,500rpm, acceleration becomes even more effortless. Climbing uphill with a full load remains smooth and enjoyable. The CR-V effectively controls the phenomenon of front wheel lifting, even when I press the gas pedal firmly.

Regarding the CVT transmission, I had some concerns before taking the wheel. Would it handle uphill climbing adequately? Can I downshift and utilize engine braking? Fortunately, my doubts were put to rest. With four passengers and a full trunk, the CR-V effortlessly ascended and descended with the help of the paddle shifters. You can opt for the comfortable D driving mode or switch to the more sporty S mode, which keeps the engine revving high to reduce throttle delay.

The road to Ba Vi summit consists of numerous bends where you can comfortably accelerate between 70-90km/h. The CR-V handles the acceleration on straight roads and the braking points before each bend with confidence. The stability, firmness, and smoothness during turns are qualities I truly appreciate in this car. As always, Honda cars never fail to impress me with their ability to make the driver feel connected to the road. The compact steering wheel provides an incredibly engaging driving experience, which I haven’t felt in a long time.

On the highway, the CR-V maintains smooth acceleration at speeds above 60-70km/h. The suspension system and chassis of the car are truly fascinating. I tested the car’s stability over potholes and rough dirt roads, and it remained surprisingly stable.

We also conducted emergency lane change and acceleration tests to compare the turbo engine of the new CR-V with the previous generation. In continuous emergency lane change trials at 80km/h, the new CR-V handled the maneuver smoothly, while the previous generation exhibited significant rear wheel lift and skidding. When performing acceleration tests from 0-100km/h, the new CR-V achieved a significantly faster time (8.5s) compared to the old one (10.2s), reducing the time by almost 2 seconds. The new car’s sound insulation capabilities have also improved. However, I must admit that the noise level when driving at speeds above 80km/h on the highway did not fully satisfy me.

The new CR-V is equipped with notable safety systems such as Auto Brake Hole, drowsiness warning (G, L versions), curtain airbags (L version), a 3-angle reversing camera, hill start assist (HSA), electronic stability control (VSA), and automatic door lock when the key is out of the sensor range (G, L versions).

In conclusion, although the CR-V may not be equipped with some advanced technologies due to price considerations, it is still a worthy investment.
