After 9 years off the market, Toyota has reintroduced the “legendary” Land Cruiser 70 Series to Japan. This SUV model has undergone upgrades in terms of engine and equipment.

Originally launched in 1984, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series (J70) is a renowned SUV model with a classic design that enjoyed significant popularity in markets such as Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. It was also well-received in Japan until it was discontinued in 2015 due to non-compliance with safety regulations.

Toyota has recently brought back an upgraded version of the Land Cruiser 70 Series to the domestic market. This enhanced iteration was introduced in August and is currently available in Australia and the Middle East with various body styles, including a 5-door SUV, 3-door SUV, and single-cabin pickup truck. However, in Japan, this model is exclusively offered as a 5-door SUV.

In its two-row SUV configuration, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series boasts dimensions of 4,890 mm in length, 1,870 mm in width, 1,920 mm in height, and a 2,730 mm wheelbase. The design of this SUV model still retains its distinct retro charm with round LED headlights and noticeable fender-mounted turn signals. The front bumper has been redesigned, featuring cleaner lines while maintaining its rugged appearance. At the rear, the taillights are integrated into the rear bumper, with the license plate frame and spare tire positioned above.

The interior of the 2024 Land Cruiser 70 Series includes essential amenities, such as manual air conditioning, USB-C ports, power windows, and central locking. The car also comes with a new standard analog instrument cluster featuring a 4.2-inch display. However, the infotainment screen is only available as an optional feature. In return, Toyota has equipped this robust SUV model with more advanced active safety features, including emergency automatic braking, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and automatic headlights.

For the new Land Cruiser 70 Series, Toyota engineers have enhanced the chassis and equipped the vehicle with a new suspension system. These improvements aim to enhance driving comfort and stability while upholding the vehicle’s characteristic off-road capabilities. Notably, the 4WD system is equipped with an electronic limited-slip differential lock, along with features such as Hill Start Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control, Active Traction Control, and Vehicle Stability Control.

This SUV model is powered by a new 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine (1GD-FTV) that generates 201 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission.

In Japan, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series starts at 4,800,000 Yen (approximately 32,500 USD or 792 million VND). Given its “stepping-out-of-the-previous-century” equipment, this price may not be particularly appealing to some. In comparison, the more spacious and technologically advanced Land Cruiser LC300 is available for 5,100,000 Yen (approximately 34,500 USD or 840 million VND).
