The Toyota Century SUV is currently being manufactured at the Tahara plant in Japan. This luxurious SUV is meticulously handcrafted by a team of 40 skilled workers who were carefully selected from a pool of 1,500 factory personnel.
Hiroki Tanaka, one of the chosen workers in the Century SUV production team, underwent mandatory training and successfully passed a certification exam. This comprehensive exam consists of three parts: an initial assessment of fundamental skills, a written test covering the history of Century, vehicle structure, and related topics, and a practical assembly test.
In an interview with Toyota’s internal magazine, Thoi dai Toyota, Hiroki shared his experience, stating, “The written test was more challenging than the practical test, consisting of 200 questions. However, I passed it on my first attempt by diligently studying the relevant books since my college days. I gained valuable knowledge, ranging from the history of Toyota and Century to advanced manufacturing techniques. It was an invaluable journey of learning.”
Hiroki Tanaka has been an integral part of the Toyota team since 2007. After completing his studies at the Toyota Technical Academy, he started his career in the production workshop of the Land Cruiser. Assembling the Land Cruiser chassis provided him with a solid foundation for his current role, which involves the meticulous completion of the suspension system for the Century. This task is particularly crucial, as any mistakes could adversely affect the final stages of production.
Precision is always a top priority at Toyota, but it becomes an even greater concern for the luxurious Century line. While other automobile manufacturers allow for a torque error of 20%, the acceptable error for the Century SUV is a mere 5%.
Tanaka explains, “While other models have each bolt tightened once using a tightening machine, the Century assembly line demands even higher accuracy. We first manually tighten the bolts using a hand clamp tool, followed by a second tightening process using the machine. Finally, a torque wrench with rotational force measured by a computer is employed.”
While it takes an average of 5 seconds to tighten a bolt in a regular car, the luxury Century SUV requires approximately 1 minute for each bolt. This explains why Toyota can only produce three Century SUVs per day, ensuring the utmost attention to detail.
