Jose Mujica has gained a reputation as the “poorest president in the world” due to his simple and honest lifestyle. One iconic symbol of the Uruguayan President’s unique way of life is his light blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.
Recently, President Mujica revealed in an interview with Busqueda newspaper that an Arab Prince offered to buy his Volkswagen Beetle for a whopping $1 million. This unexpected offer was made during the G77+China Summit held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in June 2014.

President Mujica did not disclose the identity of the Arab Prince who made the offer. The Prince personally visited President Mujica and presented the million-dollar offer for his famous vintage Volkswagen Beetle. However, President Mujica expressed little interest in the offer, as he mentioned to Busqueda newspaper.
This is not the first time that someone has tried to buy President Mujica’s vintage car. The former Mexican ambassador also expressed interest in acquiring the 1987 Volkswagen Beetle, which could have been auctioned off in Mexico. The proceeds from the auction would have been enough for President Mujica to purchase 10 brand new four-wheel drive cars.
President Mujica has no intention of selling his beloved Volkswagen Beetle as he still relies on it for transporting his three-legged dog, Manuela.
