Depreciating Value: Ford Ranger – A Wise Investment Turned Poor Sell

When the Ford Ranger was initially launched, it always had a price gap of tens of millions of Vietnamese Dong compared to its competitors. However, in the resale market, this particular model also goes through a considerable depreciation after just one year of usage.

According to a survey by Zing, customers looking to purchase a Ford Ranger at launch are required to pay an additional cost of 50-100 million VND known as the “beer and nuts” fee to expedite the delivery process. Meanwhile, in the used car market, the price of the Ford Ranger has been declining significantly.

An additional cost of “beer and nuts” of tens of millions of VND

Towards the end of 2022, due to an extended chip shortage, the Ford Ranger saw a price increase of tens of millions of VND. Many customers were forced to pay an additional cost of 50-60 million VND for accessories, despite promises from dealerships not to include them.

Mr. L.H. from Ho Chi Minh City stated that he had to pay an extra 60 million VND in order to receive his white Ford Ranger XLS 4X4 AT by the end of last year. Mr. H. shared that the dealership informed him that the delivery would be delayed if he didn’t purchase additional accessories.

“If I hadn’t purchased the accessories, I would have only received the car this year, so I had to accept it,” added Mr. H.

Back in 2018 and 2019, the “beer and nuts” fee for the Ford Ranger exceeded 150 million VND. In particular, many customers who ordered the Ford Ranger Raptor were quoted accessory prices of up to 200 million VND, bringing the total cost of the pickup model to nearly 1.6 billion VND.

Recently, Ford dealerships have started accepting deposits and scheduling deliveries of the Ford Ranger Raptor 2023 starting from the end of April this year. The “beer and nuts” situation still persists, but the cost has slightly decreased due to a decline in customer purchasing power.

When contacting a Ford dealership in Ho Chi Minh City, a salesperson stated that Raptor 2023 is quite scarce in comparison to the demand, therefore customers need to place deposits and purchase an accessory package worth 20-50 million VND.

“The Ford Ranger Raptor 2023 will arrive in early May, but the stock is limited. Customers can place deposits and purchase additional accessories for the dealership to arrange early delivery,” added the staff.

Decrease in price of used Ford Ranger pickups

Customers need to spend tens to hundreds of millions of VND on top of the purchase price in order to quickly acquire their favorite pickup truck. However, when it comes to reselling, the Ford Ranger doesn’t retain its value as well as other competitors in the same segment.

According to Zing’s survey, the 2022 Ford Ranger used models were initially listed for approximately 937 million VND on the Cho Tot Xe platform in the first quarter of 2022. However, they have now dropped to less than 800 million VND.

On the oto.com.vn platform, these 2022 models are listed with prices ranging from 548-745 million VND, depending on the version. Compared to the listed prices, the actual selling prices are lower by about 200-300 million VND. After factoring in the price difference, customers will “lose” about 400-500 million VND if they choose to resell the pickup model after only a year.

The 2019 Ford Ranger is being resold for less than 530 million VND on various used car trading platforms.

For older models such as those made in 2018 or 2019, the Ford Ranger experiences significant depreciation if the “beer and nuts” fee is added when the stock is scarce. On the Cho Tot Xe platform, the 2019 Ford Ranger XLS 4×4 is now priced at only about 500-540 million VND. Therefore, owners would lose about 400-500 million VND if they had to bear an “additional cost” of about 100 million VND at the time of purchasing a new model.

Meanwhile, Ford Ranger’s competitors also experience price depreciation, but only ranging from 100-350 million VND as they are not subject to the “beer and nuts” fee.

Specifically, the 2022 Mitsubishi Triton used models are being listed and sold on the oto.com.vn platform with prices ranging from 570-696 million VND. After a year of use, the Mazda BT-50 is being resold on the same platform with prices ranging from 565-640 million VND, which is lower than the listed price by about 200 million VND.

The Isuzu D-Max Type Z 4×4 version of the 2022 model has become available for sale on various social media groups with prices ranging from 700-730 million VND. This version is currently listed by the manufacturer at 880 million VND, excluding on-road costs.
