A recent study by Consumer Reports reveals that electric cars are experiencing more issues compared to traditional gasoline cars.
In particular, Fortune mentioned the 2023 report from Consumer Reports, which indicated that electric cars had a failure rate of 80% higher than gasoline cars between 2021 and 2023.
During the winter, electric cars commonly encounter problems related to batteries, charging systems, and starting.
Currently, electric car manufacturers are still conducting research and development to improve reliability over time. However, users must accept the fact that electric cars have numerous issues for the time being. Additionally, the lack of charging stations and high cost further dampen users’ enthusiasm for electric cars.
Moreover, the study by Consumer Reports also revealed that hybrid cars encounter similar issues to electric cars. Nonetheless, hybrid cars are still more reliable than pure electric cars as they have been on the market for a longer period of time and are gradually addressing those issues.
Consumer Reports obtained survey data from electric car owners between 2021 and 2023 and compared it with older models. Based on the severity of issues such as battery failure, engine failure, and others, the organization created a ranking.
According to Consumer Reports, the failure rate of electric cars was twice as high as that of gasoline cars between 2021 and 2022. This rate decreased to 21% in 2023 but still remained higher than that of gasoline cars.
Even Tesla, considered as experienced in research and production, is concerned about car failures, according to expert Fisher. Therefore, they are focusing on selling smaller and cheaper models like the Model Y or Model 3. In reality, these models are simpler and have fewer issues compared to luxury models like the Model S or X.
In terms of reliability ranking among car brands, Toyota and Lexus are at the top, followed by Mini, Acura, and Honda. Meanwhile, Tesla ranks 14th out of the 30 ranked car brands. Brands like Jeep, Volkswagen, Rivian, Mercedes Benz, and Chrysler are at the bottom of the reliability ranking.
