The BMW X3 is one of the most popular models from the German car manufacturer. Positioned between the X1 and X5, the X3 is only surpassed in popularity by the 3 Series sedan and has been in existence for 20 years in the US. The first generation of the BMW X3 was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 before being released to the market a few months later. In 2008, the 500,000th X3 rolled off the production line.
Over the course of three generations with a series of upgrades, the BMW X3 has increasingly shown its strong appeal to users around the world. Recently, BMW has confirmed that the next generation X3 will be launched in 2024 with options for plug-in and mild-hybrid drivetrains, as well as an all-electric iX3 model using BMW’s dedicated Neue Klasse EV platform.
The spy photographers have repeatedly caught sight of the new generation X3 test prototypes under careful camouflage since last year. More attractive M Sport versions and real M models have also been spotted on the Nurburgring.
It’s hard to say exactly what the 2025 X3 will look like, but there are signs that the fourth-generation model may be slightly larger than its predecessor. The headlights on some X3 prototypes appear to be sleeker than the current version, while the kidney grille may be larger – like most of BMW’s recent grille designs.
We can imagine the design of the new X3 through a design sketch from Motor1. The car features slim headlights, angular lines, a large glossy black kidney grille, and a more aggressive demeanor.
The 2025 X3 is expected to have an infotainment system similar to the latest BMW models. Based on prototype spy shots of the new X3, the car is equipped with a wide panoramic display screen commonly seen on modern BMWs, which combines a touchscreen center display and a digital instrument cluster.
The new iDrive 8.5 infotainment system has just started rolling out on certain models, but the X3 could have the new iDrive 9 system. BMW iDrive 9 is expected to have significant improvements over the current iDrive 8 and 8.5 systems.
As for the powertrain, BMW will offer a range of drivetrain options for the 2025 X3. The base version is likely to use a 2.0L turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid technology similar to the recently revealed X1 M35i, producing a maximum output of 312 horsepower. Meanwhile, the rumored M40 and M50 models are expected to use a full hybrid system. The X3 M40 could have a power output of over 400 horsepower, while the M50 could be nearly 500 horsepower. It’s also worth noting that BMW will drop the “i” badge from its future gasoline-powered models.
The X3 M is likely to have a more powerful engine than the current model’s 503-horsepower level. Meanwhile, the electric iX3 will be developed on a new platform to improve its range and performance.
It is difficult to determine exactly how much the BMW X3 2025 will cost, but the car is expected to see a slight price increase compared to the current version, which starts at $47,195 in the US market. The next-generation BMW X3 will be unveiled in early 2024 before going on sale later that year.
