The latest feature of the Lucid Air enables the electric sedan to charge other vehicles using a 9.6 kWh power source.
If you own a Lucid Air, you will soon have the ability to charge other electric cars using the backup battery in your vehicle. This is made possible by the introduction of a new feature called “RangeXchange”. To have this feature in your car, Lucid Air owners will need to purchase a converter, which is a cable with two plugs, and update their car’s software to the latest version. This is the first time that Lucid is utilizing their two-way charging technology named “Wunderbox”.
Once the Lucid car receives the latest software update over the air, it can charge other electric vehicles, including those from different car manufacturers, with a power output of up to 9.6 kW. The additional range for an electric car will vary depending on the specific model, but Lucid estimates that with just 1 hour of charging, a depleted electric car battery can gain an additional range of approximately 38.5 to 64 km.
Eric Bach, the Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid, explained that this integration is part of their effort to make Wunderbox more than just a battery charging hardware.
Peter Rawlinson, the CEO and CTO of Lucid, added that “RangeXchange is a small step to further enhance the daily usability of electric vehicles.”
Lucid stated that the RangeXchange feature will be rolled out to vehicles in an upcoming OTA software release. The converter will also be available for purchase by the end of this month, with the pricing yet to be disclosed.
