Mercedes-AMG’s latest sedan model will be based on the high-performance electric platform AMG.EA and is expected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower.
Mercedes-AMG is currently developing its first standalone electric sports car that is set to launch in 2025. This new electric model will replace the GT 63 4-door Coupe and will compete with luxury electric cars such as the Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT. It is expected to offer even more power than the current GT 63 SE Performance hybrid, boasting an output of 831 horsepower.
The upcoming sedan model from Mercedes-AMG will be built from scratch and will feature the advanced high-performance electric architecture called AMG.EA. This platform incorporates an enhanced drive motor developed by Yasa, a UK-based electric motor and controller manufacturer. The new drive motor is lighter, smaller, more efficient, and offers significantly improved performance compared to the current generation used by Mercedes.
While Mercedes-AMG has not yet revealed the detailed specifications of the new sedan, Yasa has disclosed to Autocar that the car will be equipped with one of the company’s heavy-duty electric motors weighing 24 kg. This motor delivers 480 horsepower and a peak torque of 800 Nm. With two motors, one for each axle, the total system power will approach 1,000 horsepower, while the torque will hover around 1,500 Nm. Additionally, the car will have an option for three motors similar to the Model S Plaid and Air Sapphire, offering a power output of over 1,400 horsepower.
Vision AMG Concept
Last year, the German automaker provided a glimpse of the new electric sedan through the debut of the Vision AMG Concept. According to Autocar, this concept car serves as a near-production preview in terms of design and overall dimensions.
The Vision AMG Concept measures 5,100 mm in length, slightly longer than the current GT 4-door Coupe and 147 mm longer than the Porsche Taycan.
A critical aspect of the new sedan will be its battery pack. To achieve a low center of gravity, Mercedes-AMG will utilize a thin underfloor battery pack featuring silicon anode material supplied by the US company Sila.
Robert Lesnik, Head of Exterior Design at Mercedes-Benz, revealed to Autocar that the electric car replacing the GT 4-Door Coupe will not be the only model built on the AMG.EA platform.
“The AMG.EA platform offers numerous intelligent design possibilities. We can achieve much lower prices compared to the EVA platform,” said Robert Lesnik. “We are not developing a new platform solely for one model. The Vision AMG serves as a starting point, and it is certain that there will be other electric models dedicated to AMG in the future.”
