The Toyota Hilux GR Sport 2023 follows the trend of wider bodies and made its first appearance on the Hilux Rogue last year. Specifically, the GR Sport is wider by 140 mm at the front axle, while the rear axle width has increased by an additional 155 mm. The detailed measurements of the Hilux GR Sport 2023 are a total length of 5,320 mm, width of 2,020 mm, and height of 1,880 mm. Compared to its predecessor, the new model is wider by 120 mm and taller by 65 mm.

Toyota has installed dedicated monotube shock absorbers, stiffer coil springs, and promises improved front/rear suspension balance for better handling performance.

In terms of design, Toyota states that the new GR Sport takes inspiration from the Dakar rally race version of the Hilux. The large front grille is designed for maximum cooling and features the distinctive GR mesh grille with the TOYOTA lettering in the middle.

Similar to the previous Hilux GR Sport, the new model uses 17-inch wheels but with larger off-road tires. Underneath, Toyota has added a skid plate and reinforced the underbody. For better braking performance, the GR Sport now has 4-piston brake calipers on the 338 mm front discs, while the rear discs are 312 mm with single-piston brake calipers, similar to the Hilux Rogue.

Inside the cabin, Toyota retains the interior of the GR Sport, featuring familiar black leather seats with red stitching and GR badges in various areas of the cabin.

The Toyota Hilux GR Sport 2023 also receives an increase in power and torque from the 2.8L 1GD-FTV engine. The turbocharged diesel engine now produces 224 horsepower at 3000 rpm and 550 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. Toyota states that the 6-speed automatic transmission has been revised to provide a sportier feel and increased confidence during acceleration and overtaking.

Toyota has not yet mentioned the safety features and driver assistance systems of the Hilux GR Sport, but we can expect the current model’s equipment to be carried over to the new model, including Toyota Safety Sense.

Toyota announces that the new Hilux GR Sport will be launched in Australia in the second half of 2023. This is expected to be a competitive rival to the Ford Ranger Raptor.
