Not many people are aware that the first car owned by the current President of the United States, Barack Obama, was a Ford Granada which he purchased for just $900.
This fact demonstrates that the current leader of the United States had a challenging life prior to his election.
The first African-American President of the United States attended community college and law school with the help of scholarships. Both he and his wife relied on government-subsidized student loans to fund their education. It took them 9 years after graduation to fully repay these loans. Hence, it’s not surprising that Obama once owned an affordable car.
President Obama’s first car only cost $900
“I bought my first car for $900. I still remember that it had a huge hole in the floor, and I could see the road underneath,” President Obama shared.
“My family’s finances only stabilized in recent years. Prior to that, we worried about paying the bills every month, rising gas prices, and other financial challenges. I am someone who grew up in the middle class, with real experiences of financial hardship. This sets me apart from my Republican competitor…”
As a student, Obama had to rely on government-subsidized loans
Obama is seemingly referring to the heavyweight Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Coming from a wealthy and influential family, being the son of the Governor of Michigan, Romney had a privileged upbringing. He attended prestigious universities and achieved remarkable success in his business career. If elected President, Romney would be one of the wealthiest U.S. Presidents ever, with a net worth of at least $200 million.
It’s safe to say that Mitt Romney has never owned a car that cost $900, nor has he experienced financial hardships like Obama has. Therefore, this candidate falls behind in understanding the struggles and challenges faced by the average American citizen, in comparison to the incumbent President.
