After the first set of leaked images, the all-new Mazda2 has been officially launched in the Japanese market under the name Demio. The global debut of the new Mazda2, including in North America, is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
From the images of the Demio in Japan, it is evident that the new Mazda2 is heavily influenced by the design of the Hazumi Concept model, which was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014. Everything from the headlights, grille, to the body, bears resemblance to the Mazda Hazumi Concept.
The new Mazda2 follows the “Kodo” design language, featuring sharp angular shapes similar to its larger siblings, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 models of 2014. The wheelbase of the Mazda2 has been increased by 80 mm to 2,570 mm. The overall length is also extended by 160 mm to 4,060 mm. The height has grown by 25 mm to 1,500 mm, while the width remains the same at 1,695 mm.
The interior space of the new Mazda2 showcases a simple and clean design, resembling its larger counterparts. The most notable difference lies in the color and interior accessories. Mazda has incorporated a modern and user-friendly style in the interior of the new Mazda2.
One of the highlights is the tablet-like touch screen integrated into the dashboard. The driver can control the features on the screen using a knob located near the handbrake lever. Additionally, Mazda offers an optional heads-up display for the new Mazda2.
As of now, Mazda has not released extensive information regarding the performance specifications of the new Mazda2. However, it is known that the 2015 Mazda2 is equipped with comprehensive SkyActiv technology, encompassing the body structure, chassis, transmission, and engine.
The Japanese market offers three different engine versions of the new Mazda2. The first two are SkyActiv-G gasoline engines, with capacities of 1.3 and 1.5 liters respectively. The third option is a SkyActiv-D diesel engine with a capacity of 1.5 liters. All engine options can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The assembly of the new Mazda2 will take place at a factory in Hofu, Japan. Following that, the car will be available for sale in the Japanese market starting from autumn this year. The main competitors of the new Mazda2 are the Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, and Ford Fiesta.
