Review: Aprilia SR GT 200 – Affordable Urban Mobility

The SR GT 200 stands out as Vietnam's premier compact and multipurpose scooter, officially brought to you. Priced at almost 100 million VND, which matches the Honda SH 150i, it sets a new standard in the market.

The SR GT 200 is the first small-displacement multipurpose scooter officially distributed in Vietnam. It is priced at nearly 100 million VND, which is equivalent to the Honda SH 150i.

When I had 100 million VND and was in search of a scooter, I had very few options besides the Honda SH 150i or the Vespa GTS. However, Aprilia has recently introduced the SR GT 200, the first small-displacement multipurpose scooter officially distributed in the Vietnamese market. Intrigued, I decided to try it out to see if it could compete with the established models or if it would be just another run-of-the-mill choice.

Compared to other models in Aprilia Vietnam’s lineup, the SR GT 200 is more affordable, making it accessible to a wider range of customers. While it may not be for everyone, it is a great option for those who value style and an exceptional riding experience. The SR GT 200 is on par with the Honda ADV 160 in the sub-175 cc multipurpose scooter segment in foreign markets. However, in Vietnam, the SR GT 200 has a competitive advantage as it is sold through official channels, while the Honda model seems to have been forgotten, with only a few imported by private dealers. The design of the Aprilia SR GT 200, inspired by the Honda PCX, is more modern and appealing to the masses compared to the often criticized PCX.

The front section of the SR GT 200 is especially impressive, with muscularly shaped plastic panels and a main lighting unit divided into 3 clusters. The factory-original bike comes with a smoked windscreen, although it is unfortunate that it lacks adjustability. The scooter is equipped with all-terrain tires similar to the Honda ADV 160. However, the unique feature of the SR GT 200 lies in its 13-inch rear rim, which sets it apart from the common tire sizes found in Vietnam.

The SR GT 200 features a simple speedometer with a monochrome display. Although priced at around 100 million VND, the scooter still uses a traditional key, unlike competitors such as the Honda SH 150i or ADV 160 that have smartkey systems. However, it compensates with an electric seat opening button, similar to other Piaggio models. The SR GT 200 also offers a spacious and comfortable legroom, unlike the SH 150i, thanks to its sporty, diverse footrest positions. The scooter’s rear seat position is designed with a high vantage point, and the rear shock absorber can be adjusted for coil spring compression (preload) to accommodate heavy loads. The tail section is raised with a lowered mudguard for a clean overall design. The low mudguard position helps prevent mud splashes onto the top part and other vehicles behind.

Piaggio Vietnam offers the SR GT 200 at a price range of 97.5 million to 99 million VND. Compared to the Honda ADV 150, the SR GT 200 is about 20 million VND more expensive. However, customers receive a scooter that is officially distributed and comes from the renowned Italian brand. The price range of the SR GT 200 caters to enthusiasts rather than the general public, as scooters priced under 50 million VND are more popular. The Honda SH 150i is a direct competitor to the SR GT 200 in terms of price. While Honda SH buyers often have to spend over 100 million VND, the SR GT 200 offers a worthy alternative for those seeking a different scooter experience.

The SR GT 200 has a responsive throttle, delivering almost immediate acceleration. With its short wheelbase and wide handlebars, maneuvering this scooter in the city is relatively effortless. The SR GT 200 is designed to handle continuous rough surfaces comfortably, thanks to its relatively long front suspension travel. However, riders not familiar with this design may find it challenging to navigate corners at high speeds or apply heavy front brakes. When taken off-road, the SR GT 200 still offers an exciting ride, although it may not match the performance of larger multipurpose bikes. The engine’s over 17 horsepower, combined with off-road tires, ensures the scooter can handle rocky roads, gravel, and soft soil.

With a ground clearance of 175 mm, the SR GT 200 performs better than other scooters on the market. However, it may not be enough to conquer high obstacles due to its long body and wide distance between the wheels. In real-world experience, the chassis often collides with the road surface when riding over high obstacles. The SR GT 200 is more suited for traveling on flat roads rather than challenging terrains. Nonetheless, it can still handle gentle dirt roads, providing a capable experience for riders.

Although named the SR GT 200, the engine displacement of the bike is actually 174 cc. This means that owners do not need an A2 license, but it is also a slightly misleading name. The engine generates a power output of 17.6 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 16.5 Nm at 7,000 rpm, making it the highest displacement among sub-175 cc scooters. The SR GT 200 boasts more power than its competitors such as the Honda SH 150i (16.6 horsepower), Honda ADV 160 (15.8 horsepower), or Yamaha NVX (15.1 horsepower). Unlike the SH 150i or NVX, the SR GT 200 has a relatively loud exhaust sound that adds to the excitement every time the throttle is twisted. However, this sound may be inconvenient in certain situations, such as in narrow alleys at night.

The Vespa GTS, along with the Honda SH, is a competitor in the same price range. These models have different design philosophies and target customer groups. The Honda SH appeals to the masses with its modern and premium look, while the Vespa GTS has a timeless fashion appeal. On the other hand, the Aprilia SR GT 200 offers a strong and versatile design style, which sets it apart from the popular models. This uniqueness presents an opportunity and a challenge for the SR GT 200 in the Vietnamese market. While the scooter will make an impression on enthusiasts as the first officially distributed small-displacement multipurpose scooter, its distinct design may cause some users to reconsider.
