For those who can overcome the “psychological burden” from Chinese brand, Beijing U5 Plus is truly a steal. This C-segment sedan combines all the essential elements: modern design, spacious interior, convenient features, and a reasonable engine. What’s more, it comes at an “unbeatable” price that competes with B-segment and even A-segment models.

Is origin and brand a concern?

Beijing is a globally recognized brand under BAIC, an auto conglomerate with over 60 years of history and ranks among the top 5 in China. Beijing cars were first imported to Vietnam in 2014. It wasn’t until the introduction of the Beijing X7 SUV model by the end of 2020 that the brand truly gained reputation and won over consumers with its product quality, value, and attractive price.

The sight of numerous X7s on the streets of major cities demonstrates the brand’s popularity and rapid development in Vietnam. This serves as convincing evidence that a considerable number of local consumers have set aside their hesitation and embraced the Beijing brand. Leveraging the success of the X7, the U5 Plus C-segment sedan swiftly arrived in Vietnam, capitalizing on the reputation of its predecessor. While some customers may still have concerns about the Beijing brand when considering a car purchase, thanks to the Beijing X7, more and more customers are overcoming their psychological barriers and confidently choosing the U5 Plus.

In short, those who hesitate will continue to hesitate. On the other hand, customers determined to pay the price and embrace the Beijing U5 Plus will undoubtedly enjoy the brand’s appealing features. So, what does the Beijing U5 Plus bring to the table?

Distinctive modern, youthful design

At first glance, it is evident that the Beijing U5 Plus boasts a modern and trendy design. Importantly, resembling the X7, the U5 Plus does not come across as derivative or simply a copycat of other cars, unlike many models from its country of origin.

The face of the U5 is defined by a broad chrome strip spanning the hood and linking the LED headlights on both sides, symbolizing a modern, minimalist design. The diamond-patterned radiator grille is wide and gracefully curved, representing the essence of ancient temples and embracing the cultural identity of the East.

Therefore, it can be concluded that Beijing cars in general, and the U5 Plus in particular, possess a distinctive design identity and have been thoughtfully developed in terms of appearance. Rather than duplicating their domestic counterparts, these cars shine with their unique features. A notable highlight is the front camera and side mirror cameras, suggesting that the C-segment sedan will come equipped with modern 360-degree cameras. Additionally, the radar sensor located under the front bumper and the windshield camera indicate that the U5 Plus will include advanced safety features.

The complete set of 16-inch alloy wheels flaunts a stylish 5-blade arrow design. Meanwhile, the rear of the car exudes a modern and sleek impression with a long LED strip running horizontally across the trunk lid. The exhaust pipes are discreetly hidden, and proximity sensors are present both at the front and rear of the car.

With overall dimensions of 4,660 x 1,820 x 1,480 mm, the Beijing U5 Plus confidently matches other models in the same segment, such as the K3, Mazda3, Civic, and Corolla Altis. The wheelbase measures 2,670mm, promising spacious and comfortable interior space for passengers.

Neat, impressive, and convenient interior

The first notable detail in the U5 Plus’ interior is the sporty-shaped seats reminiscent of third-party racing seats. More impressive than the X7, these seats feature contoured headrests with the Beijing logo elegantly embossed. This design not only enhances aesthetics but also provides a snug, body-hugging feel, ensuring passenger comfort and security.

The dashboard is divided into two distinct levels, with two rear screens connected to the center multimedia screen. This detail, previously a highlight of the Beijing X7 and often found in European luxury models, is a signature element of the U5 Plus.

Naturally, the U5 Plus’ screen system offers fewer features than that of the X7 given its lower price. The air conditioning control system is presented through knobs and physical buttons, preserving a familiar format, as opposed to the “fancy” screen found in the X7. This control setup may require some getting used to and could potentially distract drivers.

With the removal of the lower third screen, the central area of the U5 Plus offers a spacious space, creating a sense of openness for the front cabin. The car is fully equipped with electrical charging ports and USB connections. It features a beautifully designed gear lever paired with an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold function.

The air conditioning vents feature a sleek gray metal rim, presenting a modern and eye-catching design. Meanwhile, the front door panel is adorned with a reflective decorative piece, evoking a youthful and contemporary vibe with its checkered carbon fiber-like pattern.

A notable omission, especially in the Vietnamese market, is the absence of air vents in the rear seats of the U5 Plus. Only a single charging port is provided. Nonetheless, the lack of an armrest in the rear bench enhances comfort for the middle passenger.

In terms of convenient features, the Beijing U5 Plus offers an electric sunroof, automatic wipers, automatic air conditioning with dust and CN95/PM 2.5 pollen filters. The 6-speaker sound system ensures a satisfying music listening experience at the basic level.

Smooth and practical performance

Equipped with a naturally aspirated I4 1.5L engine, paired with a CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive, the Beijing U5 Plus may not be a powerhouse or deliver an exhilarating sense of sportiness when driving.

Like the Beijing X7, the U5 Plus aims to offer a smooth and comfortable driving experience for both drivers and passengers.

However, it is important to emphasize that the U5 Plus is by no means underpowered. When sudden acceleration is required, the car responds with a distinct engine growl and minimal belt drive delay, providing an acceptable level of acceleration.

The suspension system leans toward softer side, resulting in some body roll during high-speed cornering, which may cause discomfort for rear passengers. Nevertheless, the car effectively absorbs speed bumps and urban road irregularities, ensuring a smooth ride. The U5 Plus also offers decent insulation capabilities.

The car is equipped with various active safety features. Although not as extensive as those of the Beijing X7, these features are still worthy of attention. The highlights include Lane Departure Warning (LWD), Moving Object Detection (MOD), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and front and rear collision sensors.

In addition, the high-end version of the Beijing U5 Plus boasts an intelligent LED lighting system (automatically turns on/off and adjusts the beam/beam angle), a 360-degree camera, LED fog lights, and emergency warning lights.

Lastly, the Beijing U5 Plus is officially available in Vietnam in three versions, priced at exceptionally attractive and even “jaw-dropping” rates. Specifically, the 1.5L MT Standard version is priced at 398 million VND, which is 40 million VND cheaper than the A-segment Kia Morning (priced at 439 million VND)!

The U5 Plus 1.5L CVT Deluxe version is priced at 468 million VND, slightly higher than the Kia Soluto Deluxe version (priced at 439 million VND) by 30 million VND, but far surpasses it in terms of space, equipment, and design.

With its abundance of technology and modern equipment, including the 1.5L CVT Luxury version, the Beijing U5 Plus is priced at only 498 million VND, cheaper than most B-segment sedans currently on the market, such as the Hyundai Accent AT (priced at 501 million VND), Toyota Vios E – AT (priced at 531 million VND), and Honda City G (priced at 529 million VND).
