Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg, a German man, has accomplished the remarkable feat of driving a Tesla Model S for nearly 2 million km, traversing various locations across the globe, including challenging terrains like the Sahara Desert in Africa.
In order to reach this impressive mileage, the Tesla Model S had to undergo multiple engine replacements and battery swaps. Sharing his experience with this resilient car, Hansjörg mentioned that he never exceeded speeds of 100 km/h, despite living in a country known for unrestricted road speeds. He also regularly charged the battery between 15-70%.
This conscious driving approach resulted in the current battery of Hansjörg’s Tesla Model S degrading by only 8% after covering 150,000 km, allowing for a range of approximately 400 km on a full charge. In contrast, the previous battery could only support a range of 260 km before replacement became necessary.
While some engines lasted as low as 50,000 km or 70,000 km, others endured for an impressive 780,000 km. Despite encountering engine issues, Hansjörg faced no inconveniences as Tesla provided free engine replacements without specifying the underlying problem. Tesla also replaced all 3 batteries at no cost, although not all replacements were brand new. Some of the faulty components were replaced with repaired batteries and engines.
In 2014, Hansjörg acquired the Tesla Model S from a previous owner with an odometer reading of approximately 30,000 km. Over the course of 9 years of ownership, this German adventurer embarked on numerous journeys across the world, including trips to locations like Morocco, China, and even the Sahara Desert in Africa.
Gemmingen-Hornberg doesn’t solely possess the Model S in his Tesla collection. He also owns a first-generation Tesla Roadster, which has covered a lesser distance thus far, measuring only 735,000 km.
Despite the various replacements, surpassing 1.9 million km is an extraordinary milestone for an early-generation electric vehicle. Hansjörg stated that although multiple engine and battery replacements were required, Tesla completed all the replacements free of charge. While he is currently responsible for paying for battery replacements, he has no intention of reverting back to gasoline-powered cars.
