The World’s Most Expensive Car: The Ferrari 250 GTO
Over the past 18 months, vintage car auctions around the world have been significantly restricted due to COVID-19. Many millionaires are no longer willing to spend millions, even tens of millions of dollars on a car due to unpredictable economic fluctuations. Travel restrictions have also led to the majority of auctions being held online, which in general cannot generate the same excitement as “live, in-person” auctions.
Last week, Barrett-Jackson organized an auction of a series of VIN001 vehicles from American automakers, from the Ford Bronco to the GMC Hummer EV. The amount of money raised, although high (reaching a peak of $2.5 million for an electric pickup truck), is still far behind the prices of vintage cars just 2 or 3 years ago. In fact, many auctions with dozens of cars do not even match the value of a single Ferrari, which is about to turn 60 years old.
The title of the world’s most expensive car, whether official or unofficial, belongs to one name only: the Ferrari 250 GTO. Official records show a 250 GTO changing hands for $48 million, but the transaction for the 1963 Ferrari is rumored to have exceeded $70 million. Even brand new supercars with performance several times greater than the 250 GTO are priced at only a fraction of this classic car.
The Ferrari 250 GTO weighs 950 kg, and at the current gold price, the Italian car would be worth $57.4 million. This means that each kilogram of this vintage car is more valuable than gold. With only 36 250 GTOs ever produced, the price disparity is expected to increase even further in the future as these “horseback” coupes gradually disappear over the years.

Rebirth of a discarded car into an “unparalleled” vehicle
The group of students has repainted the Fiat and completely replaced its engine. Instead of keeping the original 1.1-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine, these young individuals have replaced it with an electric motor. This allows the car to travel for a long period of time and become more environmentally friendly.
