During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mr. Thomassen, who is now 95 years old, had the opportunity to purchase 3 Bugattis at significantly lower prices compared to today’s market. These iconic cars, now worth hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars, captivated the Belgian artist. Despite not being extremely wealthy, he decided to buy all 3 used Bugattis due to his admiration for their design.
His collection began with a 1932 Type 49 Berline and a Type 57 Cabriolet, both featuring unique body modifications. These exquisite vehicles served as his daily drivers for many years. Later, he added a 1929 Type 40 to his collection with the intention of personalizing it. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented him from pursuing this modification.

Although financial difficulties plagued his family over the years, his love for Bugatti remained steadfast. A sculpture of Ettore Bugatti, created by Mr. Thomassen, still stands proudly in the French National Automobile Museum. Despite numerous offers from collectors, he has always declined to part with his 3 precious Bugattis.

To protect his beloved cars from prying eyes and due to his inability to properly maintain them, Mr. Thomassen stored his collection in a hidden warehouse in Belgium. Unfortunately, last year the warehouse was burglarized. Now 95 years old and no longer able to drive, Mr. Thomassen decided it was time to entrust his valuable Bugattis to more capable hands.
The valuable Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet, estimated at nearly $700,000, requires professional care.
Consequently, the 3 vintage Bugattis, along with a 1925 Citroen Torpedo, will be put up for auction at the Artcurial Retromobile 2019 event on February 8th in Paris. The collection is estimated to be worth at least $1 million. The Type 57 Cabriolet is expected to fetch a minimum of $690,000 for its fortunate new owner.
