Recently, one of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupés was sold for an astounding $143 million, surpassing the previous record by nearly $100 million.

This SLR model is based on the W196R Grand Prix car, which achieved two World Championships. However, it features a larger 3-liter engine, specifically designed for sports car racing. In 1955, it even won the World Sportscar Championship.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO – 48,405,000 USD

In late August 2018, RM Sotheby’s auctioned off a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for a staggering price of $48,405,000. This particular model is one of only three GTOs ever built and has an illustrious racing history, securing numerous awards. Notable victories include the 1962 Italian GT Championship and class wins at the 1963 and ’64 Targo Florio.

The GTO has undergone meticulous maintenance by Scaglietti, not only in the engine compartment but also in terms of bodywork. This has transformed it from a Series I to a much rarer Series II.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta – 38,115,000 USD

With a price tag of $38,115,000, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta is another highly sought-after model. It is equipped with a V12 Colombo V13 3-liter engine, delivering approximately 300 horsepower. This specific GTO is the 19th out of only 36 ever produced and achieved second place in the 1962 Tour de France race.

For 49 consecutive years, this Ferrari was in the possession of the same family until it was sold by Bonhams in 2014.

1956 Ferrari 335S – 35,730,510 USD

Artcurial auctioned off the 1956 Ferrari 335S for a staggering $35,730,510 in February 2016. This particular model is one of only four 335S ever made, making it an exceptionally rare and valuable car. It boasts a 4.1-liter 400 horsepower V12 engine, allowing it to reach an impressive top speed of nearly 300 km/h – a blistering pace even by today’s standards.

1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R – 29,600,000 USD

At a Bonhams auction in July 2013, the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R fetched an impressive price of $29,600,000. This particular car holds immense significance in German racing history.

The W196R played a crucial role in Juan Manuel Fangio’s second Formula 1 World Championship victory. With only 14 W196s ever produced, and just 10 remaining today, this model is exceptionally rare. Mercedes currently owns six of these iconic cars.

1956 Ferrari 290MM – 28,050,000 USD

Sold by RM Sotheby’s in December 2015, the 1956 Ferrari 290MM made someone’s Christmas extra special with its price tag of $28,050,000. It is one of four 290MM models ever produced and was specifically built for racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio. In the 1956 Mille Miglia race, Fangio finished 4th behind the wheel of this car, an impressive feat considering the participation of 426 cars. Equipped with a 3.5-liter V12 engine generating over 320 horsepower, this Ferrari is a true performance machine.

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider – 27,500,000 USD

In August 2013, RM Sotheby’s auctioned off the stunning 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider for a price of $27,500,000. Originally produced as the Spider version of the 275 GTB coupe, this model was a special request from Ferrari’s North American dealer.

Only 10 NART Spiders were ever built, 15 less than originally planned. NART stands for North American Racing Team and was run by Luigi Chinetti. Beneath its captivating exterior lies a powerful V12 engine, coupled with a similar gearbox as found in the 275 Coupe.

1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale – 26,400,000 USD

Sold at RM Sotheby’s in August 2014, the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale may not carry as high a price tag as its 250 GTO sibling, but it is rarer. This Speciale features a super-thin alloy body, making it one of the only three 275 GTB/C Specials ever produced. Furthermore, it holds the distinction of being the first Ferrari equipped with the 3.3-liter Columbo V12.

1956 Aston Martin DBR1 – 22,550,000 USD

The 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 was sold for a significant sum of $22,550,000 in December 2018. This car served as the official Ferrari Works car during the 1956 and 1957 seasons, achieving podium finishes at the Mille Miglia and the Buenos Aires 1000 km races. This particular DBR1 is one of only four 290MMs ever made and one of the remaining three. Restored by Ferrari Classiche, it now proudly displays the 12 Hours of Sebring 1957 livery.

Also sold by RM Sotheby’s in December 2018, the 1956 Ferrari 290MM holds a price tag of $22,005,000. This car shares the same racing heritage as the previously mentioned DBR1. It achieved podium finishes at the Mille Miglia and Buenos Aires 1000 km races. As one of only four 290MMs ever produced and with only three remaining, this Ferrari is a true collector’s item. Restored by Ferrari Classiche, it proudly showcases the iconic 12 Hours of Sebring 1957 livery.
