Over the past decade, Toyota has been steadily evolving and pushing the boundaries of its comfort zone. The company has also undergone transformations in terms of the exterior, interior, and engine of its products.

Recently, Toyota has ventured into the realm of sportiness by introducing GR (Gazoo Racing) versions of two popular models, the Yaris and Corolla. It is highly possible that the Japanese automaker will continue this trend and release a sporty GR version for the 2023 Camry.

Considering the GR Corolla/Yaris models, one can only imagine the striking appearance of the Toyota GR Camry. However, the powertrain remains a major challenge, as it is uncertain which high-performance engine would be a suitable match for the current Camry chassis.

One proposal involves upgrading the 1.6L 3-cylinder turbocharged engine from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla to accommodate the additional weight of the Camry. Yet, pushing the engine’s power limit to around 450 horsepower proves to be quite a demanding task.

The second option entails Toyota heavily investing in the development of an entirely new engine.

It is likely that, in order to optimize costs and reduce development time, Toyota will utilize the engine from the GR Corolla/Yaris models in the GR Camry as well.
