The Toyota FT-86 or Subaru BRZ is a joint project between Toyota and Subaru. These two sports cars are the dream of any speed enthusiast.

If Nissan boasts about its high-speed supercar GT-R, and Mitsubishi has the Lancer Evolution, Toyota has its own sports car called the 86. In fact, the Toyota FT-86 was introduced in Vietnam in 2012, 10 years before the Honda Civic Type-R.

When it was first launched, the Toyota FT-86 had an official price of 1.65 billion Vietnamese dong, which was equivalent to the price of a Mercedes-Benz GLK, a luxury model at that time. However, only those with a true passion for JDM sports cars would be willing to spend such a hefty sum to own a Toyota FT-86.

After more than 10 years and over 50,000 kilometers on the road in Vietnam, the Toyota FT-86 can now be found in the used car market with a selling price of nearly 800 million Vietnamese dong. Compared to the current generation of 86 cars, the design of the 2012 model might seem a bit outdated now. However, it is important to acknowledge that the trend in sports car design has evolved significantly since 2011.

Nevertheless, the Toyota FT-86 is equipped with advanced technologies. In addition to ABS, the active safety features of the car include a brake assist system (BA), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), vehicle stability control (VSC), and traction control (TRC).

The vehicle stability control system of the Toyota FT-86 offers 5 different modes for the driver to choose from based on different driving conditions and styles. Additionally, the car is equipped with 7 airbags to ensure the safety of the driver and front passengers.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 2.0-liter Boxer engine developed by Subaru and Toyota. This engine produces 197 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 205 Nm in the rpm range of 6,400 – 6,600 rpm.

Coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 11-year-old sports car offers a simple yet intuitive interior design. The seats are upholstered in genuine leather and Alcantara leather, with the driver’s seat designed to hug the driver and provide optimal support for cornering maneuvers.

With 700 million Vietnamese dong, you can easily find versatile 7-seater models or compact B-segment SUVs that are currently popular among Vietnamese car buyers. However, if you want to experience the true essence of a JDM sports car, there are few options that can match the Toyota FT-86.
