According to Toyota’s confirmation, the new Hilux version will use a diesel engine combined with mild-hybrid technology, promising improved performance while enhancing transportation and off-roading capabilities.

This Hilux version features a 48V mild-hybrid system with a single engine integrated into the drivetrain to increase power by 16 horsepower (12 kilowatts) and torque by 65 Nm. It is combined with a 4-cylinder 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine from Toyota, delivering 201 horsepower and a maximum torque of 501 Nm. A small 48V lithium battery pack provides energy for the engine, and it is a mild hybrid system, so the vehicle does not have an all-electric mode.

Toyota states that the Hilux Hybrid 48V has a higher pump efficiency than the standard diesel drivetrain. With the electric motor, the pickup truck’s engine can stay off for a bit longer when driving on congested or slow roads. The Japanese automaker also lowered the diesel engine’s idle speed to 600 rpm to achieve better fuel consumption. Notably, although Toyota claims that the 2024 Hilux’s efficiency has been increased by 5%, there are no specific statistics on fuel-saving capabilities.

Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V is not only refined in terms of its drivetrain. This electric pickup truck is equipped with Toyota’s Multi-terrain Select system, which includes 6 driving modes: Dirt, Mud, Rock, Sand, Deep Snow, or choose Auto and let the vehicle determine the best mode. To ensure safety when off-roading, engineers have taken additional steps to waterproof electrical components.

Hilux Hybrid 48V has an approach angle of 29 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees, while the ground clearance is 310 mm. The Hilux Hybrid 48V is still designed as a body-on-frame model, and the payload remains 3,500 kg when towing and 1,000 kg when carrying goods. It can wade through water up to 70cm deep.

The manufacturer states that the Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V will be available in Europe starting from mid-2024.
