With a 34% market share in new car sales in Thailand, Toyota is gearing up to test electric pickup trucks in the country. This move comes as a response to the entry of various electric vehicle models by Chinese car manufacturers.

Given that about 50% of vehicles sold in Thailand in 2022 were pickup trucks, there is still a significant untapped potential in the electric pickup truck segment. Pras Ganesh, the Executive Vice President of Toyota Daihatsu Engineering & Manufacturing, confirmed in a recent interview with Reuters that the company is currently manufacturing an electric pickup truck in Thailand.

Toyota unveiled an all-electric pickup truck based on the Hilux in December 2022. The launch event took place in Thailand, and the vehicle is expected to hit the market soon.

Ganesh also mentioned that Toyota plans to conduct a trial run of a small fleet of electric pickup trucks in Pattaya starting from early 2024, using them as taxis.

According to a report by research company MarkLines, Toyota held a 39% market share in the 1-ton pickup truck segment in Thailand during the first 9 months of 2023. Although electric pickup trucks have not yet been introduced to the Thai market, there are already several attractive new electric vehicle models from China, such as the BYD Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal, as well as the Great Wall Motor Ora Good Cat. It is expected that electric vehicles will account for less than 9% of total new car sales in Thailand this year.
