The year 2024 has just begun, and it’s time for car manufacturers to reveal their sales figures for the previous year. In 2023, the US car market experienced a recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic, with experts predicting a total sales volume of 15.5 million cars, representing a growth of around 13%.
Leading the US market in terms of sales volume in 2023 was General Motors (GM), the American car corporation. Over the past 12 months, GM sold 2,577,662 cars to domestic customers, marking a 14.1% increase compared to 2022. This is GM’s best result since 2019, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Within the GM corporation, Chevrolet remained the top-selling brand, with 1,699,244 cars sold, reflecting a growth of 13.1%. Following closely is the GMC brand, which sold 563,677 cars, an increase of 8.9%. However, the subsidiary brand with the highest growth rate within GM was Buick, with a remarkable 61.4% increase, selling 167,030 cars. Moreover, in 2023, GM also managed to sell 75,883 electric cars to Americans, accounting for 2.9% of their total sales.
Marissa West, Vice President of GM North America, stated, “We dominate the pickup truck segment and have achieved success with affordable SUV models like the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista. These are currently among the best-selling models.” She added, “In 2024, we anticipate strong sales growth and are excited about the opportunities ahead. We will be providing customers with new choices such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.”
Coming in second place behind GM is the Japan-based rival, Toyota. In 2023, a total of 2,248,477 Toyota and Lexus cars were sold to Americans, representing a growth of 6.6%. Meanwhile, Ford Corporation ranked third in the overall market, having sold 1,995,912 cars, an increase of 7.1%. This growth rate is the highest Ford has experienced since 2020. However, despite the success of the F-Series, which has been the best-selling model in the US for decades, Ford still couldn’t surpass its two competitors, GM and Toyota. In 2023, Americans purchased a total of 750,789 Ford F-Series cars.
Claiming the fourth spot in the US market is Korea’s Hyundai Group. Last year, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, the three brands under this corporation, enjoyed great success, selling a total of 1,652,821 cars and experiencing a growth of 12.1%. This achievement allowed Hyundai to surpass the Stellantis corporation, including well-known brands like Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo. On the contrary, Stellantis had an unsuccessful year, with sales dropping by 1.3% to 1,533,670 cars.
Honda, with its two brands – Honda and Acura, secured the sixth position in the overall market. In 2023, a total of 1,308,166 Honda and Acura cars found new owners in the US, representing a growth rate of 33%. It’s evident that Honda’s growth rate surpassed its competitors mentioned earlier.
Other car manufacturers that witnessed strong growth in the US market in the previous year include BMW, which sold 397,521 cars (a growth of 9.3%), Mazda (363,354 cars, a growth of 23.2%), the Nissan/Mitsubishi alliance (986,136 cars, a growth of 21%), and Subaru (632,086 cars, a growth of 13.6%). The Volkswagen Group, consisting of brands like Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini, sold 565,416 cars to Americans, experiencing a growth of 14.2%.

Honda Accord: 40 Years of Automotive Excellence
Looking at the Vietnamese car market right now and humorously comparing it, we will see Camry as a well-behaved young girl, not outstanding in every aspect but easily becoming the choice of the “other half”. Teana, on the other hand, is like a dignified and tranquil woman, full of courage. Meanwhile, Mazda6 is like a hot girl, quickly attracting and captivating anyone’s gaze from the first encounter. As for Accord – with the elegance and experiences of a U30 lady, even though she is always praised by everyone, she hides something “difficult to deal with” in the minds of the majority.
